For war movies and westerns, i believe it is pretty normal to use real guns as "prop guns" in some shots because the audiences for those include a fraction of people who will scrutinize the depicton and go full comic-book-guy if everything isnt perfect. Especially on close-ups.

Ive seen low-budget movies where they try and low-budget cgi all the gun stuff and it looks horrible. Its probably orders of magnitude cheaper to do a real $300 blank firing cowboy shooting reproduction gun/practical effects shot than to hire ILM and spend 1,000 man-hours at $1000/hr getting the CGI just right with the lighting and reflections right.

Alec did it because the cinematographer didn't lit him properly. She didn't get Baldwin's good side.

....and I'm going to hell for that comment.

Yeah, one of hundreds if not thousands of movies on a shoestring budget. I bet it's hard to separate cost control from clear safety protocol at certain points. Ugh.

What would make it worse is if Alec was goofing around thinking it was loaded with blanks and pointed it at them firing it as a prank? But, I think they said it happened during filming of a scene...which means these two on the sidelines were standing in the line of fire. I don't think I would want to be standing in the line of fire even if it was a prop gun. If anything, then you would think another actor would have taken the bullet. This is just so tragic in more ways than one.

    This is horrible.
Mistakes happen but this all should be John Wick style CGI about now

‘Overworked’ crew members on Alec Baldwin film walked off set before fatal shooting: report

--- When union workers packed up their gear Thursday, nonunion replacements reportedly showed up on the Bonanza Creek Ranch where “Rust” was being filmed. ---

Is it possible this escalates to SOMEONE (Not Baldwin) catches some Negligent Homicide charges?

im guessing it was a scene were baldwin was shooting at the camera, which you see in a lot of westerns. or the opening credit sequence in james bond movies. that would explain why the cinematographer and director were shot instead of another actor.
