    There is an amazing case out of southern California about the change in the law and the obvious result. It isn't very long, but the statement of facts is an entertaining read. Pay special attention to the defendant's testimony, as the court quoted it.

    Criminals have caught on that society doesn't care to prosecute petty theft crimes. People generally believe that big boxes can absorb the losses, but they don't realize everything is marked up to account for theft. Corporations don't lose, thieves win and law abiding consumers pay for it.

    Crime already isn't investigated and hasn't been for a while. Try calling the cops about something getting stolen. They will give you a case number and tell you to file it with your insurance. They will do nothing about it.

    They are misdemeanors, which are still punishable by jail and fines (1 year & $1K). I wouldn't blame Prop 47. Enforcement of the law might be an issue, but not misdemeanor vs felony.

    But nobody aka the police is enforcing it
    You know what happens to all those items stolen ?

    actually it’s a great scheme by the criminals

    the higher tier criminal gets an army of homeless bums to steal $999 worth of cosmetics etc from Walgreens and target
    Then resell it in the flea market
    Gives the bums either drugs or $100 for drugs

    I think it's important to be careful of a few things. Extrapolating something out of a few retail stores as a larger trend for a metropolis, and Assuming correlation is causation. More data and evidence is needed on whether changing shoplifting from a felony to a misdemeanor resulted in this - which appears more a result of organized crime than individual actions.

    Secondly, the question arises on whom the burden of retail security should fall on? The local police or the retailers themselve. The cost of having police deal with petty crimes and the cost of incarnation of shoplifters over a few hundred dollars is questionable.Why can't the retailers implement solutions - such as Target limiting store hours?

    Thirdly, shoplifting has become epidemic across the country with the pandemic. So this is not in fact an issue limited to SF but has wider implications: https://www.forbes.com/sites/tommyb...eration-as-pandemic-drags-on/?sh=7e744b87216e

    Colorado also has Safeways. Pumping more money to these folks could potentially reduce some shoplifting.

    all your answers are here.

    1. there's extremely lax shoplifting rules Francisco. you can jack up to $900 and the cops will do essentially nothing.
    2. organized crime sees this and makes a great plan. Get homeless people and drug addicts.
    3. Drug addicts and Homeless people STEALING $900 COSMETICS SHOULD RAISE A RED FLAG SHERLOCK
    4. San Francisco Police busts GIANT warehouses of stolen products for RESALE.
    5. This is not a trend in other cities. San Francisco PRIORITIZES HOMELESS PEOPLE AND PETTY CRIME OVER BUSINESSES.

    This is not shocking, CVS, Target, Safeway and Walgreens take action.

    @Commodore
    @Nook

    Essentially
    IDEA - Let them steal so they can survive, food, water, medicine
    REALITY - They steal for organized crime so they can get paid in Heroine and other drugs

    Who wins?

    Organized crime

    Who loses?
    Businesses
    Residents

    If CVS and Walgreens closes, residents have to drive to other cities to get their pharmacy drugs
