Now imagine if Squid Game failed and didn't get any traction, even in South Korea. Would be the biggest yikes. Yikes on top of yikes on top of yikes.
As far as a second season, the movies or tv shows exploring survival games haven't faired so well critically ( Hunger games, Maze Runner, Divergent, Saw, Cube). Seems they run out out of gas by either repeating the same stuff or opening up a bigger plot that is relatively boring. They would really need to explore Squid Game game begins or open it to a new unexpected twist to maintain critical acclaim. Very difficult. I am glad to have read he would seek help writing it. But the guy did a such a great job himself the first go because on 2nd watch you can pick up a lot of clues a lesser director or writer would have just not thought to plant. It's a good second watch for detail and depth.
Spoiler Really enjoyed it however I felt the cop storyline was kind of a waste. Maybe a good way to peek into the life of the soldiers etc I guess. Also would have preferred it ending after the final game was over but good series.
Watched it shared thoughts that the ending... Spoiler was ****ed up that he let his friends mother end up wirh a little snack stall, let his girl and the orphan brother rot for a year I mean it's more realistic when you think his life flushed down the toilet when that factory sent in goons and killed his friend to break the strike. PTSD breaks a man...but to let all that money stay frozen in the bank when he prob would've used it to save his mom, reminded me how he was more deadbeat degen than good guy who had bad breaks Overall, this show had crazy strong anime vibes, which is great for new audiences. having a good ending makes an anime great these days of mostly mass monetized junk, so hopefully each season is more contained or resolved like money heist Maybe they're scalping PS5 for a kidney. Those prize boxes those players won... If i had to guess, the plot will be an evolution of Battle Royale, which is what Hunger Games ripped off but for a Western tween audience. This tone and themes will be more Korean. Half of its global popularity is about a side of Korean life u dont normally see.
Funny you should say that. There was an anime back in 2008 that was basically 'squid game: the anime.' Or maybe it's more like "Squid Game: live action Kaiji." Not sure how many people have their toes in both anime and Squid Game, but anime junkies like @DreamShook, @steddinotayto, @Rocket River etc will enjoy it.
Haven't seen it. It looks like just another excuse to show amateurs trying to kill each other. It was stupid in the Hunger Games and now it's a whole genre unto itself. Am I wrong?
Contrived? Every time I step into HEB I am putting my life on the line to survive and get food because of Covid. It's just how the world is in now and in the future. joking
Think they were going to die in the real world, or in the game, and part of the point was there was no difference. So they had a choice, but the choice was easy for them. In fact, almost all of them died in exactly the same way they were about to die in the real world. And there'in was part of the genius of the the first theme they presented. Go big or go home...what's the difference.
It's like Hunger Games or Battle Royale in how they comment on present day class and society issues through violent and sometimes gladiatorial games, but outwardly, they're not that much alike. If you sour on sensational deaths found in the shock horror genre, it might not be your cup o tea. Your ass is on the line at the toilet paper line. COMING SOON THIS CHRISTMAS 2021
At a basic level, it is like Hunger Games/Battle Royale in the sense it's a last man standing life-or-death contest for a prize. There aren't gratuitous death scenes like in the torture p*rn genre (House of Wax, Saw). Where this show excels is in its character interactions and how it deals with societal issues. Squid Game does it better than all the others.
