From reading a lot of corrections on Twitter last week : it actually was on the year before (1970). It was nationally syndicated in 1971, though.

In any case, I used to love watching it back in the day. Great musicians and 70's dancing. Solid Gold was a cheap rip-off!!! :D
Oddball story : I was watching an old episode of Sanford & Son (which I do often), and this guy comes in to buy a bugle. The voice sounded familiar, so I looked it up and it was the announcer from Soul Train - Sid McCoy. The kid he bought the bugle from went on to direct a lot of tv shows like St. Elsewhere, Blue Bloods, etc. but I'll save that for another thread.

    Love, peace, and soul...

then again . .. who can sing live?

I always hated this show because it meant Saturday Cartoons were over.

    Bingo!

They got worse and worse as the morning went on, though and your options were Tom and Jerry, Soul Train and American Bandstand.

I recall around afternoon was when the kung fu programming came on, isn't it? I remember waiting for that and then somewhere they took it off and I swear I thought life ended. :(

There were a a number of guys early in the 70s that sang live on Soul Train.

Don Cornelius HATED the early hip hop/rap guys. Its hilarious watching him introduce them because its clear he'd rather be anywhere else.

Maybe it was Sundays. I remember there being one on a local station. Maybe Channel 39 or 26 and another on USA Network.

Kung Fu was on 39. I’m pretty sure Soul Train was too.

Are you talking about the series Kung Fu with David Carradine? I was talking about the old school kung fu movies like Five Deadly Venoms, Return to the 36th Chamber, etc. -- like in your profile pic. :D

Don't recall any Kung Fu, and my brother were epic TV watchers.

Who recalls Carrascolindas and Villa Allegre?

I was really too young to fully appreciate early peak Soul Train but I did enjoy the last couple decades of it's run.

Also as a kid I was definitely watching cartoons and Kung Fu Theater movies, Shaw bros. etc on Saturday mornings.
