Th problem... we are no longer masking and we are not social distancing (and I think the risk of infection from hard surfaces has been minimized). In fact, the very same people that resist/protest masking and social distancing resist vaccines. They protest mask mandates. They protested closures. It is as if they are really pro-virus and pro virus spread.
I agree. These things have a way of evening out though. Unfortunately, as more and more die, more and more will get scared into getting the vaccine.
Another problem... protests against vaccinations, mandatory mask and closures have allow the further spread of the virus and worse, the development of variants like Delta. If we had been more aggressive and disciplined in our response early on, its quite possible we would not e needing these more drastic measures.
We are almost through year 2 of this virus. Folks are not showing "being scared into" getting the vaccines. If anything, they are digging their heels in deeper, just read some of the posts here among retrumplicans arguing against vaccines and other responses to the virus.
I don't buy that mostly. Delta was well on its way before vaccines were offered. The early response was an atrocity though.
The Delta Death spikes are fairly new, though. I hope that doesn't seem contradictory of the post above. It's really not. Delta was well on its way in other areas before the vaccines, which meant it was inevitable here. The death spikes are just reaching us now and I think they've scared more people into vaccines.
Only 56% is fully vaccinated in the United States. Only 52% in Texas. Unfortunately, it isn't scaring people to get vaccinated. A large percentage of the population have resisted getting vaccinated and will continue to resist.
You do not "buy" that the longer it takes to achieve herd immunity, the greater the chance of variants?
I take pleasure in knowing anti-vaxxers are dying. Anti-vaxxers are an ignorant group who are arrogant. They defy public health measures to ensure other's safety in a society. They are killing people. Why shouldn't I be happy when the world gets safer when one dies?
All viruses have variants over time. Viruses mutate and the more people that get infected the more chances there are more mutations. So you don't believe delays in getting enough people vaccinated caused by these protests have contributed to increases in variants? Here is a pretty good explanation of variants... https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/variants/
Unfiltered and blunt From a selfish angle...if you live around the mouthbreathers, you might have to wait or expect to be denied at a hospital if they're overflowing with angry entitled miscreants
No, it doesn't. No vaccine is 100% effective. However, 20% is very misleading and this vaccine has been very successful. I don't want to go into those points here though. Be happy to go into details in the D&D covid thread. To get back on topic of your thread. I'm simply making the point that virus isn't your body and thus it's does not fall under "my body, my choice".
If we're talking analogies, a better fit for non-vaxxers would be smokers. The **** they both breathe out makes society want to cast then out and segregate them away for 'their choices'. At least inhaling second hand smoke won't cause people to exhale third or fourth hand smoke.
I get what variants are. I took your statement to mean that people physically being at protests caused variants. My bad.
We're finding out that it only reduces your chance of infection for a couple months. More people need educated on this. If the vaccine decreases your chances of covid by 3 fold and you're taking 5 times the risk, you're not at more a risk of getting covid than you were before the vaccine, essentially. Especially after 4 months.
What do you mean no it doesn't? And I get your my body my choice point. I don't disagree with it. But the vaccine most definitely falls under my body, my choice. Depends on perspective. Kind of the point of this thread.
We've designated areas where smokers can smoke, though... I think people should be tested before they go into crowded events. It's the safest way. Charge them a bit more and test them... I hate the flu analogy, but we're getting to the point to where this needs to be treated like the flu. You get your vaccine once a year (hopefully that's it). If you don't get vaccinated, you're on your own. We're too far gone to stop variants. We have been since before the vaccines were out, imo. The most concerning thing are that hospitals are filling up and turning people away. Got to figure that out...
Quick and cheap testing is one of the pillars to squash this. We're just not there yet. I don't think it'll go that far as mandatory yearly shots unless it mutates so quickly that the body doesn't know what it is all the time. The main thing is that this virus can be benign but since our immune system can't recognize it, it goes to town all over our body.... From the gut, the heart, even the brain. Cons desperately wanted 80% herd immunity last year under different leadership, but now that we're more or less in the last mile with the cure waving in front of their fat feckless faces, they switched goalposts again to block a win. What herd immunity means is that the virus doesn't overrun society and our healthcare system. I mean there might be bad years with nastier variants but evolution isn't about creating the perfect human killer virus. These vaccines should at least block hospitalization rates for a few years and ideally the people who don't take boosters end up with a bad 'flu' over a few days
