So a company that exists because of government subsidies and policies decides to move because Elon got his. When it is time to pay some taxes its time to move.

Well, luckily for 1 former employee, Tesla should have plenty of cash to pay him the $137M court judgment that just got handed down for having a racist, hostile workplace environment.

...and the $163M in Norway for intentionally slowing charging speeds

    ...and the...

California is greedy by having an additional 13.3% cap gains tax rate in addition to the 20% federal cap gains rate. He doesn't owe that state government anything especially when they did their best to drive him away.

He paid $455 million in taxes on $1.52 billion in income from 2014 to 2018.

Are you implying that you want mark to market taxation of gains on assets?

It's cool... as long as headquarters doesn't have female employees or employees with kids... really anyone who gives two ***** about things like, I dunno, sane COVID leeway for schools, public health, etc. I say that with great sadness, as someone who used to fantasize about moving to Austin.

Would love to hear from his employees about this but he damned sure won't allow that.

Cool story: there was a government tax rebate of $7500 on Teslas from 2013 to 2018, which was also available on any other EVs on the market. In 2019 they hit the 200k unit cap for the subsidy and since then, every Tesla sold, which is the vast majority that you see driving around since their sales have gone exponential, were not eligible for any tax rebate or subsidy. Meanwhile almost any other EV in the market you can still get that $7500, but people would rather give up that money and get a Tesla instead.

During the 2008 financial crisis, very early days in Tesla before they even really started delivering cars, they took a couple hundred million in bail out money to keep afloat, along with the tens of billions that gm and Ford took. They paid that money back years before it was due with interest to the tax payers, meanwhile Ford and gm still have not.

Ever since they hit scale in 2019, nothing has been subsidized, although it sounds like the government is about to pass a new ev rebate without an unit cap, so Tesla may be eligible again soon, along with every other manufacturer.

There is also the whole pay for pollution credits thing which was more a european program. Tesla has turned the corner, but not sure how closely you have followed Tesla, but there were many times the company could have run out of cash. If the various loan and subsidy programs didn't exist who knows if Tesla makes it.

Companies expect bailouts and subsidies, but when it comes to pay any taxes well they can't do that. They need to find every little loop hole to get out of it.

Also like half the cars Tesla sells in the US go to cali.

California is greedy, but it still annoying when these guys make a gazillion dollars and they pay less in taxes than me.

This is the endgame rope-a-dope that the truly wealthy play to be truly wealthy. They have lawyers and accountants to find every loophole, and they have money to lobby (and bribe) lawmakers to change the rules to be or stay in their favor. Nothing new to see here and those loopholes are there for anyone who wants to take advantage of them. I'm not saying it's right, but it's how the game is currently played.

I also think a lot of vitriol and surprise is expressed because people think Musk is some sort of boy genius tech liberal. He's not. He comes from money and is an old-school industrialist. I think the sooner people realize his true business nature the sooner they will just accept the news cycle of 'evil billionaire does thing that the plebeians don't understand and are angry with'
