NBC got a new mystery box show called La Brea after canceling their other mystery box show Manifest (now a hit on Netflix). What are these people doing? Do they really think it will take off on network TV like Lost. it isn't happening. TV has moved on, lol

Big Brother finale last night. Enjoyed watching the cookout alliance run this season.

I really wonder if network television should just switch to a miniseries model and forget about regular series. For one, it doesn't require any commitment beyond that one year but that also means they can be more invested into the series so the producers, directors, writers, and actors can benefit as well.

Having one compelling miniseries run 15 episodes is better than putting out a mediocre show that you would have to cancel due to low viewership.

Honestly, the pilot episode is pretty good. The premise is interesting and can go a bunch of different ways.

I'm going to give it a shot, just because it looks weird and fun. Fully expecting to be eventually disappointed though, it's network tv after all.

Naw man, it's a trick. How many interesting mystery box shows have come with an interesting pilot only to string us along? I got a few:

The Event, The Returned, Manifest, Debris, Revolution, Under The Dome, Extant, Emergence, The River, Last Resort, The Crossing, Alcatraz, Emergence, The Whispers, Touch, Terra Nova, Wayward Pines.

    it's endless!

They are trying to rope you into a never ending plot with no payoff.

Did they ever touch on the Shangrilah book, the fountain of youth thing?

Man, I had so much hope for Flash Forward. That one I remember being disappointed it got canceled.

I think Flash Forward (after Lost) was the show that started all these cut and paste mystery box shows

Nah, breh, I was asking if that idea has been used but seems it hasn't. (at least not in TV shows)

I am not sure what the Path was with Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkmann).

I forgot about The Path! lol endless! I'm telling you.

I feel like there has been some kind of Shangri-La, Fountain of Youth stuff somewhere in these sci fi shows. If not literally it's a metaphor.

Or like the Nexus in Star Trek that keeps feeding you your most wanted desires, the place that doesn't let you leave.

I have been preoccupied with crime shows that kept me 'grounded'.

British ones at that with strong leads.

A Confession, The Pact, Man Hunt, Baptiste (European co-production) (The Missing)

Hadn't heard the term "mystery box show" until you said it earlier...it fits perfectly.

The Billions season finale was great, everyone brought their "A" game. Really sad ending. If you haven't watched it yet, don't google Damian Lewis

Man, I watched this thing hoping it would be a cool show. The acting was pretty horrible and it was kind of corny. In general, it sucked. I really don't watch much network tv, and I wasn't going to watch this after having my tv watching ruined when Falling Skies and Terra Nova were cancelled (and I kind of liked those two shows). After that first episode, I'm going to have to force myself to watch the next episode just to give it a chance.

tl;dr - show creator hopes people watch for the emotional story rather than the mysterious premise. Showrunner states he and his team has had a looooot of time to plan this show, due to the pandemic.

    Hopefully it'll be good.

Started Maid on Netflix. Its a drama that perhaps would have been targeted to run on Lifetime but on Netflix it has much better writing and acting. Its about a young woman (attractive in the girl-next-door way) and her really cute little daughter, fleeing her abusive boyfriend suddenly homeless and jobless and finding the need to fend for herself and her daughter. Lots of sad and a few funny parts so far. Margaret Qualley is great as the lead... Andie McDowell way overacts as her mom (and apparently is her mom in real life), but good performances throughout.
