TAIPEI, Taiwan - China flew 52 fighter planes toward Taiwan on Monday in the largest show of force on record, continuing the three days of sustained military harassment against the self-ruled island.

China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory, to be brought under its control by force if necessary.

The number of sorties into Taiwan's air defense identification zone had prompted a statement from U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price over the weekend, who warned that China's military activity near Taiwan risks miscalculation and undermines regional peace and stability.

Saber rattling from Beijing or a prelude to a massacre?

These things happen so frequently around the world that it’s usually the former. But all it takes is one downed jet for China to justify its subjugation of Taiwan.

    Agreed.

What if anything should we do about it?
    A strongly worded letter?

We already did, we strongly condemned china's actions. China in response also strongly condemned US selling weapons to Taiwan. And on and on we go

    So Cuban missile crisis them?

I don't know how many nukes China has, but assume it's enough to make living in the aftermath really sucky.

Leave Taiwan alone? It’s industrialized, high standard of living, and is an integral country in the modern world.

China wouldn’t do anything directly and it would long term end China’s fantasy of controlling Taiwan. China would respond by arming or supporting some anti US entity… but once Taiwan has nukes, that changes the Chinese calculation.

Pretty much this. This is just more sabre rattling from the PRC and likely has to do with the recent US, UK, Australia alliance. The PRC knows that any attempt to invade and occupy Taiwan might lead to a war that they could lose. They also know that such a move would crater the world and their economy.

In short war with the PRC is probably very remote but that doesn't mean they aren't going to make shows of force every now and then.

How would this be different from the Cuban missile crisis when Russia was transferring nukes right outside the USA? China would either blockade to prevent nukes or if it's something that's after the fact, they would be looking at first strike options which basically puts nuclear war as a very real possibility.

Yes, nukes in Taiwan changes the calculation from China doing a show of force, to China initiating MAD.

Out of curiosity how many on the forum would be willing to have 1) a nuclear war or 2)personally go fight for Taiwan or send their sons and daughters, nephews and nieces to defend Taiwan?

China is just saber rattling. The fact that they are as dependent on us as we are of them will keep us from ever having a real conflict.

The difference between China and Russia is that we don't need anything from Russia and the only reason the rest of the world deals with them is their oil and NG.
