Not sure where that is coming from. James has elite stuff and strikes guys out like crazy (13.41 k/9 over 104.2 MLB innings). He’s had trouble staying healthy and giving up walks and homers. But some of that is bad luck. James still has elite upside as a RP. He probably won’t make the postseason roster but if he does it isn’t that bad.
On May 29, 2021, Strom said Raley was the unluckiest pitcher in baseball. Since then, Raley has a 2.70 ERA and the peripherals to back it up. While I doubt Astros expect Raley to be as good as he's been lately (i.e. 3 months minus a little time on IL), I think Astros probably trust Strom in thinking his full season ERA is inflated by bad luck early in the season. Only things that might keep Raley off a postseason roster is a heavy RHB lineup like CWS and/or meltdown in last few games.
It's not bad luck. You can't have "bad luck" for 105 GD innings. What is wrong with you people? Don't get caught up with his 99 mph fastball. Because he doesn't know where it's going. True story.
Is the 3 batter rule in play during the playoffs? I cant remember from last year and my googling skills are coming up empty. I know the runner on second rule goes away.
I think he was talking about how crazy unlucky James has been so far this season. At least I assume. Check out James xFIP
James is actually my dark horse to get in, but ONLY if he razzle dazzles these last few weeks. Dude can be elite if he can consistently throw strikes, which has always been his problem. Since coming back from the IL recently, he looks to have significantly improved his control. If he keeps that up, he will get some consideration.
