No, man, not at all! Nothing like a TPE! TPE has appeal for counter-parties because they can shed payroll, completely different. TPE is actually a somewhat useful, asset. I’m talking dead money, with dead money the counter-party takes on the liability to pay it. Why would a team want to take on dead money? Dead money is a really bad thing on your cap sheet, not an attractive asset at all. a team would be willing to take on and pay dead money ONLY if it is inevitable. I.e. I have this player that I can’t trade for value (or for TPE for that matter), so I may as well waive/buyout him and eat the dead money salary. But wait, Team X would rather have him, if I pay THEIR dead money. OK, let’s make a deal. So what’s the end result? You end-up with a single buy-out (Team X) instead of two buy-outs. So exactly the opposite of what you’re saying, fewer buyouts.
I was thinking about Dallas. They need a 2nd Star level player and Luca and Porzingis aren't meshing. With Porzingis the Rockets get an interior player with length, who's mobile, can shoot the 3 and has a history with Silas. With Wall, as you said Dallas would have an extra ball handler and playmaker and to have a former point guard as a Head Coach, I'm sure Wall would mix well with Kidd
Neither is Porzingis. Wall has 2yrs left on his contract Porzingis has 3yrs but I think it'll be a positive move for both teams.
You're missing my point--if the Mavericks want a 2nd star player and Wall isn't one....then why are they going to trade for him? I'm not disagreeing with you in regards to Porzingis; I'm questioning your idea that Wall is still a star player.
Including this coming year, Wall has made 230 million dollars in NBA contracts alone. If he really wants to be traded he needs to decline his player option for next year. If he did that he would be traded today.
Also can a player option be changed to a team option? If so then Wall can get traded, prove he is still the superstar he thinks he is and the next team can pick up the option.
I don't think Wall cares about being traded as much as he wants to get his money. There's no team out there that will give him a contract that either beats or matches that $45 million he's set to make if he opts in for next year. If teams weren't going to pay Schroder or Reggie Jackson this past offseason teams aren't going to line up to pay John Wall.
I guess that's my point. He doesn't want to be traded to try and improve his legacy. He just wants his cash and will waste way a year riding the pine.
I don't blame him for it because $45 million is a ton of money to leave on the table. If Wall and his agent aren't going to discuss buyout scenarios (giving back maybe $4-$8 mill per season) then he's sure as hell not going to decline his player option. Worst case scenario for Houston is that Stone can't find a trade partner, Wall stays for the entire year, opts into his player option, and we go back to square one next fall in trying to deal Wall but now as an expiring contract.
Thank you! People act they would sacrifice $45 million "for the good of the team." $45 Million? If my boss asked me to give up $450 "for the good of the company" I would tell them to f*** off.
Yes exactly. Wall may not be a "star" but he can create points, which is the most valuable commodity. 20pts 7assts last year, that's absolutely legit. May not be 45mil worth but it's legit production. Don't understand why CF is undervaluing him so much. The issue with Dallas is they are hoping for Jalen Brunson to make another big step in being that secondary ballhandler/creater. He was good in the reg season and pretty bad in the playoffs. So likely they'll wait to see how Brunson looks and/or if KP can increase his trade value before doing anything. Wall value is fixed if he won't play. So Dallas will likely be patient and sit on that deal for awhile.
Wall is a 5 time All-Star, I think he's on the same level if not better than Kyle Lowry who just signed a 3 yr $90M deal at the ripe old age of 35. I think he's STILL a star. He put up 20 and 7 coming back off of a 2yr layoff. I'd take Wall at 31 for 2yrs!
Fans forget that this is a job for the players. Players only worry about things like “legacy” and “winning” AFTER they have gotten their big pay days. Wall is more likely to take a small contract to win AFTER he gets all of this one….and, after stripping away the fan logic, who can blame him?
John Wall got us the #2 pick.. how much money is that worth? Let's run it back next year and try to be turrible again!
dream on, who in their right mind gives up 50 million? No one will want wall without comp. Rockets are probably content to let wall not play and get paid for two years
Maybe he would look at what CP3 had done this past season and thought, "Well, if I could prove my worth for a championship run, someone might give me a 60M 3-year deal after I declined my 45M option."
