So I have a beautiful little golden dog. She’s a girl and a few years old.

I realized the other day that I have never had a dude dog, only girls

Do you prefer to get a dog of one sex and why?

    Males.

For no reason and that you eventually cut their nuts off. Which is horrible.

    What was the question again?

As long as you get them fixed it does not matter.

Agreed. Male dogs be trying to flex on other dogs too much. All that flexing tenses up the meat.

We got my childhood dogs spayed (boy and girl) and regretted it, it caused weird problems in both dogs (hormonal and bladder). Today I think some vets may offer more sophisticated operations than castration and full ovary removal, but I don't think it's very common. Our dogs were strictly inside dogs though, the risk profile for an outside dog who can get loose or wander off and breed is a different consideration

As to OP, if not spayed, in my personal experience, the question is would you rather have a dog that humps and pisses on everything or a dog that bleeds on everything for 2 months out of the year?

Personally, I'll take the bleeding, it's a pain in the ass, ours slips out of the doggy diaper a lot, but I'll take it in comp to the boys constantly hiking a leg on everything that ever comes into contact with other animals.

i intentionally switch it up when i get a new dog...male-female-male-female.

theres no behavioral difference that i noticed based on gender. and like buck said, if you spay or neuter it doesnt matter.

males will sometimes air hump if they get really excited and they will get boners every so often so i guess thats a downside. but girl dogs have their downsides too...my last dog was a hairy female golden and she was always getting pee in her butt-fur. she must have been a deep squatter. it could be stinky and that was something i never had to deal with the dude dog.

I have a female that lifts her leg and squats at the same time to pee.

I've had both over the years but looking back I think I enjoyed the male dogs a little better.

My current dog Rufus is a half lab half springer and he's the most laid back dog I've ever had. I can keep the doors open and he doesn't run off at all (unlike the last female brittany I had) and Rufus must be all bladder because he only goes pee twice a day and I swear he pees longer than any dog i've ever seen. only draw back are elephant size turds from the beast. ughhh

For no great reason, I used to only consider males. Current dog is F. Now I know it doesn't matter at all. All were neutered though.
