From public information it looks true, and I think is part of the reason the trade was made. Though, just because something is widely accepted by us fans doesn't mean it is 100% true.
If you're having to trade players because you're manager is not on the same page as your GM, why wouldn't you just fire your manager? That's ridiculous that something like that could happen.
Yes, fire your 70+ year old African American manager in the middle of the season when you are leading the division and are 1.5 years removed from a huge scandal.
That would seem to be the thing to do if there weren't non-baseball reasons. I'm not 100% confident that is the sole/main reason. There is a chance Click/Strom really likes Maton or the prospect.
Then why was he extended another season to begin with? I doubt a rift of that magnitude between Dusty and the FO appeared overnight. Did Click want to move on and Crane overruled him? Having to make transactions you'd rather not make of players who are fairly valuable to the organization because of your manager's insubordination is a level of dysfunction that does not portend well for this FO.
Both of those reasons could be true at the same time… In the end, Straw was getting a disproportionate amount of playing time vs. anybody else on the team relative to his backup’s skill level.
Not really an extension… just picked up his option. And did so last July, well before the playoff run and well before anything this season. Front office/managerial clashes happen, even on winning teams. Happened here in 2014 when the nerd cave was truly running things. Analytics pointed towards Porter being the best person to guide the young team… turned out they were wrong.
Maybe not overnight, but it’s certainly possible that a rift can develop quickly. Whether Baker played nice in year 1 and changed course this season, or whether conflict just naturally didn’t arise until this season, it’s possible everything was cool until Click asked Baker to bench Straw for McCormick.
Love Straw, thinking he could top out at having a Michael Bourn type of career and make an all star team one year. That being said stros are better off with Meyers, just speaks to the high standard of hitting you’ll need to maintain to be a part of this special group.
It really is cool to see so many ex Astros all over the league. And it’s because of the glut of guys moving up the pipeline. like the old saying, you can’t play them all. and in this case, you can’t afford all of the all stars at market value either. Heck no team in baseball except maybe the Dodgers and Yankees could.
Who are the ex Astros players you follow most? My favorite guys to keep a eye on are: Musgrove Moran Toro Grossman Teoscar Hernandez Vince Velazquez Straw Springer Keutchel I guess I’m intrigued if they do turn into the all-stars many were projected when they were in the system / or if they play up to their huge free agent contracts. Hernandez has already accomplished that feat, by becoming an all star. Springer has looked like an MVP in his limited at bats, but the injury bug has hit him a lot this season.
Hinch talking to Correa on the twitters…DET may very well be all in on CC…Miggys contract coming off the books soon too…Carlos’ numbers will struggle in that ballpark but if top dollar wins out, we may see Showrea in Detroit…they could definitely pony up more than anyone else.
Add J.D to that list. I'm happy to seem them excel in their new roles. Oh, except that Coal guy? Kohl's? Kol? Don't know why. I mean he had every right to be angry for not pitching in that game we don't talk about.
