The Texans were 4-12 last season and they are replacing Deshaun Watson, who had the most passing yards in the league, with Tyrod Taylor. There have been no notable additions, and they had no picks in the first two rounds of the last draft. David Culley is a 65 year old first time head coach in the NFL. This season has disaster written all over it.
You lost your best player on defense in Watt and two best players on offense in Watson and Fuller. From an already talentless team and added NO ONE of note. A bunch of journeyman vets on 1 year deals. Taylor or Mills as QB already guarantees a losing season no matter what weapons they are surrounded with. But the defense that was historically bad last year actually got worse. This is likely one of the least talented rosters in the last several decades of the NFL. The only above average player on the entire roster is your LT. Take all that into consideration and remember that’s before injuries and you have to replace your already terrible starters with their even worse backups. 0-17 wouldn’t shock me at all. Likely will win a game or 2 off some timely turnovers and some fluke plays though.
You know who makes a MOTIVATED players? Journeyman vets on 1 year deals. People playing for their next “meal” will play over their heads with the right coaching. I see alot of them on Defense. There is talent on the roster. Not ELITE talent, but capable players. Again, coaching will make a difference. They hear the talking about the worst roster. We will see what happens.
A friend and I were talking and trying to figure out how many games win Tyrod have to win to get benched?
Can’t explain it and don’t know what it is but…watching the first preseason game…felt really really good without having “stars” Felt good to have a real team feel and not just preaching it no one man seeming like they are above everybody else or this or that mess. Ross blacklock spoke to this in an interview after practice. No Watt No hop No Watson No Clowney No mathieu So forth and so on…this change has been really really refreshing and very much needed and I for one am excited about the future of this team especially with #BDN in charge.
If that happens then we get a very high draft pick and hopefully pick a QB to rebuild with, so mission accomplished. Trade Deshaun next offseason (fingers crossed) and you get a huge return and the rebuild is fully on. Unfortunately, I don't think they are going to be complete trash. I need to see a little more but I'm leaning towards a 5 win season. That's bad enough to get a decent pick, certainly top 10, but it probably isn't top 3. The Texans have no "major additions" but they have slightly improved at nearly every position. The offensive line doesn't have a Rice volunteer coaching them, and there is a lot of promise there. The defensive line should have depth, and a few young players could show some improvements (Omenihu, Blacklock, etc.). A good offensive line can make a very average team look much better than it is, so we shall see. If it blows up and is a complete disaster, then it'll be miserable, but we'll be salivating over draft talk while we cruise to a top pick. It's certainly not the worst case scenario.
I'm at a wait and see approach. I can see a scenario where they play way over their heads and are the shock of the league. That optimism is mostly built on the offensive line and how a great o-line could impact the entire team. I also think it's possible that it's a complete disaster that crashes and burns → number 1 pick baby! I think the most likely scenario is that they are competitive and gritty but just lack the top end talent to consistently finish games → finish with 4-7 wins (probably worst case scenario of the 3)
The issue is lack of top end talent. The hope is that a few younger players show improvements and catapult themselves into that conversation (Reid, Johnson, Greenard, Omenihu, Blacklock, Howard, Heck, Scharping, etc.) Depth should be mostly okay, especially at o line and d line. There are some holes elsewhere.
Trevor Lawrence has never lost a regular season game in his career at any level. Even as a rookie pretty sure he can beat the crap we are throwing out there. You are probably the most optimistic person in the world if you think this team can win 8 games. This team will be lucky to even be in 8 games all year. 0-17 here we come. Let's set a record that can't be broken the first year it's possible. 17 losses in one season.
Your optimism is something else. I would be stunned if this team can win more than a single game. Keep in mind preseason means nothing. The 2008 Lions went 4-0 in preseason only to go 0-16. Most of these teams are not playing starters. Hell, we haven’t faced a starting QB yet this preseason.
The Texans won't have one of the worst defenses of all time this year, but their offense? Yeesh. The happy talk around here is going to be a thing of the past until draft/trade season.
Nah, I comprehended your post just fine. 5 wins would be a miracle. Culley should win coach of the year if he can manage 5 wins with this sad pathetic roster.
