I really hope that this team has some success because all these comparisons, examples from the 90s and 80s.

    That was decades ago.

Just tells you how long it has been.

Space Jam 2 has been out, even though first one was more original.

Y’all are funny. Y’all act like the summer league isn’t pre-pre-season. Christopher has been instructed to show out as a SG. The team isn’t running with a PG and they’re trying to teach the Rockets system to them. Play. Watch film. Teach. Adjust.

He’s going to be great. He’s really a steal at 24.

I expected more along the lines of Sengun given he played in Spanish league, widely regarded the 2nd best league in the world after nba.

It's like most of these guys and the coaches barely ever met each other before summer league! Come on Tillman.

    Exclusively through Sengun? Seriously?

I don't see much of an offensive approach. What we're currently running is something like this: "Do you see the 3-point line? Find it and stand behind it. One of you can stand in the far corner, the next one stand on the wing, top of the key, wing, and corner. Sengun, you take the wing and come over and set a pick so the guard can drive. After the pick, float back to the 3-point line. Everybody, you've got a green light to take your man off the dribble or shoot the 3. Remember, we only have 24-seconds."

This is not an offensive "system." You can find it at your local Y if you have a willing screener. It takes about 15-minutes to walk through. Your "system" is broken if 5-10 newcomer Tremont Waters (9 shots) gets more looks than other players. Did I mention KJ Martin got 8 shots as well? Maybe this is all about game conditioning and introducing players to the refs (the rookie treatment whistles in SL are evident).

Now, all that said, I do think the coaches have spent some time talking to guys about how they want to play things defensively. But based on the limitations of our guards (other than JC), any semi-respectable NBA guard can get a near uncontested mid-range shot. Our big Summer League revelation is that the Rockets can contest at the rim and create turnovers. The people most surprised by these developments are the young refs who would like to practice assigning fouls, but they're finding that harder to do than usual.

no its like they never played a game of basketball before in their lives when in fact they are 10-15 years veterans depending on when each of them started to play/practice

i was at the local team practice facility the other day and one of the drills for the 10 yrs youngins was to play 5 vs 5 but no dribbling allowed and no shot allowed until all 5 of the players touch the ball!

    IT WAS FUN TO WATCH!
and the youngins played a better basketball than SL rockets did!!

this is the drill weaver and silas need to put john wall, the waters guy and JC tru!
my goodness the audacity of some of these people!

    DING DING DING

You folks should not act surprised. This is a long term rebuild from the ground up with at least 2-3 years of tanking culminating into 2023 free agency when we'll have cap space. We are developing players this season, not trying to win games.

Sengun did not play in the Spanish League. Did you mean Garuba?

So the coaching staff said “screw learning to pass or getting teammates involved”. Play completely out of control and execute as many 1 on 3’s as you can. Dribble around the perimeter and jack up well contested 3’s.”

He is a defensive specialist. That's all he can do for now. It's obvious you haven't been following him. There is some offensive potential, but it will take a lot of time. The good thing about Usman is his work ethic.

Regardless of their approach, the PG play on their summer league team has been non-existent, and that clearly hurts. When Jalen was there it was better and he's not a PG either.

Not not his offense, I know his offense was bad. But his defense wasn't that great as well, he looks lost on the court doesn't really read the plays or understand what is happening. Basically I expected him to be more NBA ready than Mobley showed in SL since he already had international experience like Sengun.

Yes. I meant I expected Garuba to be more like Sengun given he (Garuba) had played in the Spanish league. Of course not in terms of scoring but basically just rebounding, defense and overall presence on the court I expected him to be the most polished among our rookies.

Garuba seemed to adjust to the speed of the game in the last game. I suspect he will spend a great deal of the season in G-league, but will get a call up and some pretty extensive meetings when it becomes clear we are out of contention for the play-in and do the unintentional tanking thing.
