My 2 cents is that it was less "anti-American" and more "Anti-Villain" to counter push the Anti-Hero theme of SS...who you thought was bad is more (chaotic) good. Who you thought was good was more (lawful) evil. If the movie was truly anti American, it would've hit you in the face with it like a good Hollywood movie... Waller has always had a means to an end personality, and I liked how Gunn used that to hammer in an overarching theme you normally miss from any DC hero movie not directed by Nolan: - They aren't just mercenaries who are only in it to reduce their sentence and let off some steam for us to enjoy. Cena played the guy who followed orders to bring out that contrast. - Some of them were more exploited, thrown out, or genuinely misunderstood. Thus more relatable to the anti-hero vibe. It's that personal connection Marvel movies are really good at aiming for, which is why their mediocre offerings still break half billion. That and their costume/effects design that do their best to translate the comic medium (with flashy gaudy colors and outstretched, sometimes unrealistic, angles/proporitions) onto more realistic expectations of film.
This really isn't a spoiler, but I'll spoiler it anyway. Spoiler Not-Deadshot not being Deadshot didn't even register with me until something I read this morning pointed it out.
just saw this about 30 minutes ago I’m quick to hate on DC and think most of their stuff is garbage and can’t hold a candle to the movies Marvel is putting out, but when it comes to this movie, I LOVED IT…would definitely watch again and recommend to a friend I was laughing throughout and invested for the entire run time 10/10 this is right behind The Dark Night when it comes to DC related movies for me movie was so good I had to look up who directed it…keep doing your thing James Gunn
Watched it last night. I'll preface by saying I didn't watch the first one so I don't have a baseline to compare Gunn's version but this was pretty enjoyable. I thought John Cena stole the movie as his Peacemaker had all the great lines. I can definitely see DC/Warner Bros/HBO pretty much giving Gunn a blank check and let him do whatever he wants on whatever DC IP he wants moving forward.
I think that's one of Gunn's strengths--he finds a way to add depth/layers to all of the main characters. That will go a long way with the DC universe if they intend to keep giving Gunn more movies to direct.
Yes, but he was a really minor character, he was actually in the Suicide Squad.... until Rick Flag killed him.
B- Almost a C+ as I found myself checking the clock about 2/3s through. Good action, interesting villain, interesting characters, and pretty funny. I think the superheroes and anti superheroes is just wearing thin and this might have been an A- three years ago. Haven't gotten a wiggle since Invincible.
if this was connected to something more, I would probably watch it. But as a stand alone, I'm not rushing to get to it.
the only DC or marvel movies i have seen are the christopher nolan batman movies and the hulk with ed norton, which was like 20 years ago. i dont watch these kind of movies at all. ive never even seen guardians of the galaxy. i watched suicide squad last night and loved it. i was laughing throughout. the action, violence, cinematography were all great. loved the characters. im surprised to see so many lackluster reviews in this thread. it kind of reminded me of a cross b/t watchmen and kick ass (in terms of comically ridiculous killing). i definitely want to see guardians of the galaxy and peacemaker after watching SS.
im really confused by this exchange. you did say that you liked the first one better and you really went off on dreamshook for what i see as a perfectly cromulent post from him. now in this post you say you like it better than the first. then you say the first one is an A- and the reboot is a B. so youre saying that the first one is better, no?
