[Kenny Smith Bill Simmons] Giannis compared to Dream

Dont ever compare Dream to Giannis basketball wise. Both are great dudes but thats where it stops. Simmons is a clown and Kenny has been one.

 

These simplistic nationalistic comparisons are embarrassing. Just imagine the amount of Okur and Kanter mentions whenever we play, it will be atrocious and instant mute worthy.

Either he needs to be "booster" slapped by Dream or Dream slapped him too hard the last time!

 

Didn't watch the clip (didn't care to) but Kenny Smith should stop trying to be Mr. All Things Rockets Nostalgia for the media. We need Horry or Maxwell to take his place.

Kenny is a sellout to me. He'll say anything and do just about anything just to be relevant. He knows better to make ridiculous comparisons like this.

 

People still try to emulate the Dream Shake today, no one will take any inspiration from Giannis(basketball wise) when his career is over much like Shaq.

That's like comparing Pete Maravich to Charles Barkley. Two drastically different players. The only similarity is height like Pistol Pete and Charles Barkley.

One things for sure though is if Hakeem was drafted into the modern day NBA in the same draft as Giannis (knowing he'd be Giannis) it wouldn't even be close with who the 1st pick in the draft would be. His skill in the modern NBA would be out of control. Like how Wilt's size was an unfair advantage during his era. Like a mixture of Durant's shooting, Harden's footwork, Mutumbo's defensive ability, and Kobe's work ethic & inventiveness.

Hakeem: 37 mpg, +1.5% rTS, 23.1 ppg, 13.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 2.2 spg, 3.8 bpg, 3.1 tpg, 3.9 fpg
Giannis: 33.9 mpg, +5.6% rTS, 26.8 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.3 spg, 1.4 bpg, 3.3 tpg, 3.1 fpg

But Hakeem peaked later. I would put his 5 year peak at seasons 8 through 12:

Hakeem: 39.4 mpg, +2.8% rTS, 26 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.7 spg, 3.7 bpg, 3.2 tpg, 3.6 fpg

Hakeem played more minutes per game, as most stars of that era did.

But that only captures regular season. Post season is where Hakeem really excelled.

 

I'll add that if Giannis played for the Rockets and just led us to a championship, there would be many threads on here comparing him to Hakeem.

but i will say in general i have no issues comparing Hakeem to anybody.... 'Giannis is about half the overall player Hakeem was" is perfectly acceptable imo...

 

I can't stand that it seems that anytime anyone wants to talk classic Rockets they go to Smith...Horry, Maxwell, Elie, hell even Shaq all do a better job about talking about the older Rockets and Olajuwon than Smith ever did. The only thing Kenny Smith is good at is patting himself on the back.

 

Ginobili was the first guard to play until his 40's? Wouldn't have been able to do it in the 90's due to hand checking?

they play nothing alike and dream was
much more fluid and skilled.

Giannis is a 26 year old 2x MVP, FMVP, champion, DPOY, and just dropped 50 in a finals close out game. It’s not disrespect for anyone to be compared with him.
