Yeah but they weren't experienced professionals, they were extremely young inexperienced somewhat naïve women still trying to break into the business. It's why he didn't seek experienced professionals, they'd have just kicked him out immediately.

He sought out victims who would be most influenced by his perceived power over them and who might be convinced that his actions weren't as abnormal as they really are. Most high profile clients who are legitimately seeking massages would be looking for the exact opposite of these women, which is why in the eyes of Watson's victims the opportunity was so potentially valuable to them.

You can convince an 18 year old Private to go out and get an exhaust sample from a Humvee or ask around trying to find some prop wash or blinker fluid.....you can't pull that off with a 25 year old Sergeant.

 

The most cynical timeline is proceeding as the prophecy foretold.

• Watson turns out to be a bonafide sexual predator
• Texans get virtually nothing for Watson (and piss away what assets they receive for him... if any)
  
• Watson goes on to win a Superbowl with another team*

*Bonus points if that team is the Titans/Cowboys

A grand jury could ultimately hold the key to Deshaun Watson's legal and football future

Despite a report that Deshaun Watson trade talks were “heating up” between the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles, multiple sources close to the teams and quarterback told Yahoo Sports that Watson’s NFL future remains in limbo and there has been little movement on the trade front.

A primary factor for the standstill: It appears the crawling criminal investigation into Watson has become a major concern for trade suitors.

Two NFL teams that reached out to the Texans regarding Watson told Yahoo Sports this week that they remain deeply concerned about an ongoing Houston Police Department investigation. Both teams were particularly concerned when Watson’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, declared last month that at least two new women had filed complaints with the HPD regarding the Houston quarterback. By Hardin’s account, 10 women have now met with Houston police, eight of whom have filed civil lawsuits against Watson. The two most recent complaints with the HPD come from women who have not filed litigation against Watson to date.

That’s a significant development for Watson because it now creates a second group of women that Hardin’s defense team will have to tend to, including the 22 women who have filed civil complaints alleging sexual misconduct (all through attorney Tony Buzbee), and at least two others who have chosen to speak with police despite not retaining Buzbee to represent them. That development, coupled with the totality of the allegations against Watson, is generating serious consternation from teams.

As one general manager put it to Yahoo Sports: “There are still a lot of unknowns. Everything that has already happened — that’s a big concern, but I’m also thinking about what happens after you trade for him. How much more is out there? What don’t we know? What happens if you do the trade and then 10 more women surface? Where does it end? I don’t know how you can trade for him without some kind of protections for that.”

While the Houston Police Department has declined to comment on the Watson investigation, sources close to Hardin and Buzbee said Thursday both lawyers believe the current number of complaints against Watson could eventually lead the Harris County Prosecutor’s office to impanel a grand jury. If that happens, Watson will face potential indictment and prosecution if the grand jury decides there is enough evidence for Watson to be charged with a felony. As it stands, it appears at least two of Watson’s civil lawsuit allegations could rise to the level of felony sexual assault, an important point, as grand juries are not seated to make determinations on misdemeanors.

Should a grand jury indict Watson, it’s believed the NFL would place him on the commissioner’s exempt list, which the league office has declined to do despite having spoken to a handful of Watson’s accusers. The NFL’s decision to allow Watson to play in training camp was initially viewed by potential suitors as a boost to his tradability, despite the first of his civil suits on track for jury trial next offseason. But teams were wary about the criminal investigation into Watson even before two additional women filed complaints with the police.

To date, the NFL has not interviewed Watson in its investigation into the civil suits and criminal complaints against him. Sources close to both lawyers said they believe Watson will be requested to do so by the league at some point after the conclusion of his criminal investigation — which means the process of sorting out Watson’s legal and football future could take months or more.

You can trade him now and maybe get a few 2nd round picks, or maybe a late 1st. Or you can wait until he settles and get multiple 1st's. When he's leading the league in passing with another team the media will just keep making fun of the Texans for trading him for nothing.

 

You have a point but this franchise is a joke. Just tired of it all.

 

If he's indicted, you might get nothing.

The simple solution seems to be to try to trade him now and including escalator clauses based on playing time. If he can't play, the acquiring team pays less. If he gets to play, the acquiring team pays more. Either way, it lets the Texans move on.

 

If his value won't go up over time... and can only go down... why would a team give up anything significant for him now (escalators or no escalators?).

The only way this works out for the Texans is if there's a legitimate market of suitors that can drive up the price. If there's just one team trying to figure out the most attractive (but lowest possible) offer, I'm not sure that moves the needle.

 

I would imagine for the same reason as any team trades for a player. Why did the Lakers trade for Russell Westbrook instead of waiting until he's a free agent and acquiring him cheaper?

You do it because (1) you don't know if you'll be able to get him later if there are more suitors and (2) you want to get as much value out of your trade as you can. 4 years of a player is worth more than 3 years of the same player, so you'd pay more for it. And while Texans' fans were conditioned by BoB to believe it's OK to wait 4 or 5 years to try to get a QB while the rest of your talent wastes away, most teams aren't so stupid - they know the sooner they can solidify the QB position, the sooner they can build a contender. So when an opportunity presents itself, good franchises tend to go chase elite QB's.

Every year the Texans wait, they'll end up getting less because they are providing a less valuable asset.

 

This is a unique, unprecedented situation for both sides. There is no “book” on this. There is not some storied history of franchises trading for available elite QB’s prior to the start of a season. He does not have an injury or age concern (Manning/Montana). He’s not at the end of a contract. Not sure where/when he would start to depreciate, but its not at the moment… unless his legal issues are that problematic (and that would be visible to all teams)

If you’re the trading team, you want as many suitors as possible. At this time, with most teams already putting in game plans and still leery of his lawsuit issues, that would be at a minimal. If you’re desperate enough to look past that, yet you’re still one of the only suitors, there is zero reason to start off with a sizeable offer… or essentially risk bidding against yourself.

You’re advocating the Texans should take “anything” for him and consider themselves lucky… implying he will possibly have no value due to legal troubles.

 

What is unique too is this situation has high likelihood of someone left holding the bag
