I came here to say the same thing. It was not only the club; the press and the fans also believed that he was exaggerating his medical situation in order to get leverage in his negotiations. All we can do is appreciate his greatness in the short time we were able to enjoy it.
I used to get pitching lessons from JR when I was a kid. My friend’s dad used to own batting cages off of Bissonnet and JR resided close in the Sharpstown area. Super good dude and was always willing to give tips to kids on their swings and how to build arm strength. A true legend…. RIP J.R
RIP JR. Astros would almost never win in LA. Then JR would shut them out. Great pitcher when he got better control later in his career.
My wife has a great expression for this: "Today is the 'good 'ol days'" Enjoy everything to the max because one day you'll look back and realize all your experiences were more special than you thought at the time.
He found his control in 1978 and confirmed it in 1979 when he had his best full season. He wet from Hmm to WOW!
Born in '78, so I never saw him pitch (or at least in a game that I would remember). I do know he was good and fairly feared as a pitcher and that his career ended too shortly, unfortunately. May he rest in peace, and hopefully his family can use this time to celebrate his life.
It's amazing how times have changed. I do wish JR understood it wasn't as much a racial thing as it was classism (and sexism in other cases.) People were still proud of their blue collar work ethic which meant working through anything that didn't kill them. Folklore honored stories of those coming straight from a hospital bed to go to work. If you didn't live through it, you really wouldn't believe it. Blue collar would make fun of the white collar pansies and how soft they were. They'd take off work for a headache.
When he was on, he was honestly the best pitcher I’ve ever seen. No hyperbole. He was absolutely dominant.
Enos Cabell just said on the broadcast (several times) that JR should’ve gotten the shot and had been in the hospital. Such a travesty regardless, but if it it was COVID related, just a gentle reminder that I really hope and urge y’all to get the vaccine if you haven’t already.
I'm old enough to remember this guy at his peak. He was ELECTRIC. Sorry to hear this news. Too young. Rest in Peace.
Just hearing that this might be COVID-19 and that he wasn't unvaccinated. Just more tragedy considering he was both elderly and had preexisting conditions. He should've been among the first to be vaccinated.
