If they come to Austin they have a new fan. Would love to cheer on a team that actually might have a bright future unlike the trash organization that is the Texans.
Would be cool to have a nfl team But Jerry Jones owns most of Texas as cowboy country Also he will do everything in his power to block it they should not have an expansion and move the chargers over People in LA don’t need to two football teams or two basketball teams
There’s no way in hell Jerry would ever allow this to happen. Plus, any billionaire owner who wants a city to pay 100% for a new stadium can kick rocks. Austin City Council had some hardliners against the construction of Q2 Stadium - a 20,000 seat, privately-financed soccer stadium built on top of a city-owned, condemned former chemical plant - who embodied the NIMBYism our town is famous for. I cannot imagine the resistance that a 100% publicly-funded NFL stadium would face in Austin. The Bills would need to build that thing in Kyle or Buda.
Cowboys and all the old Big-12 Texas schools would have better radio and TV viewership in Austin, to say nothing of the Texans and Saints if they're doing well. Austin, San Antonio or any city other than Houston or Dallas getting an additional big three franchise is impossible. Hockey could happen in Austin like it did in San Jose, but only with maybe another decade's worth of growth and Houston's continued reluctance to do so themselves.
Why couldn’t San Antonio get it? Tear that dump down and rebuild it there. This is gonna sound crazy but, how about you move the team to Toronto.
Outside of the Houston metro, Texas is Cowboys country. Maybe the Oilers had a piece of San Antonio when training camp was held there but it disappeared. I’m sure San Antonio would love a team - not sure of the finances and whether Jerry and Cal would consent. Austin doesn’t need a team - UT operates like a pro team. MLB would run into the same territorial issue. NHL is the most likely but even then it’s a long shot as the NHL isn’t expanding anytime soon and Houston is a much better market, I’m excluding NBA because of the Spurs. Texas won’t have a 4th team.
There will be no team in Central Texas. Jerry won't allow it. Texans would support Jerry. Toronto would be the logical place for the Bills. Gets the NFL into Canada.
NFL isn't exactly a forward thinking league. Would be a terrible fit in Austin. F1 and MLS work well there. San Antonio is a different story.
I think I might see it in my lifetime. It'll take a combination of the Cowboys being kind of a joke for a while and Jerry croaking. Eventually the central Texas region will have too many people in it to ignore. They can't all be Cowboys fans forever.
Unlike Bob, who had big pull in NFL circles, Jerry has set his son up well to take over and continue the "influence", if you will. I just don't see how any municipality around there will be able (or want) to build a billion dollar stadium any time soon. Aside from the financial considerations (and the Cowboys and UT), the NFL makes a ton of sense someday somewhere south of Austin and north of SA.
If the Buffalo Bills owner values his life, he would not say such things in public. The Buffalo Bills fans are quite the rabid bunch.
Yeah, I just don't see how any city between the two - Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, etc. - could come up with the financing for an NFL stadium if an owner insists on public funds. I stand by my assertion that the Austin city council would never agree to public funding for a stadium and I would be shocked if San Antonio agreed to more renovations for the Alamodome.
It shouldn't be a council initiative. It should come from Travis County. I think San Marcos is realistic. I don't think Janice McNair has the kind of influence you guys seems to think she does. Jerry is just 1 vote. The rest of the owners aren't going to turn down a new NFL stadium if it materializes in a growing market when they will get 10-12 million payout in relocation fees. Jerry isn't THAT powerful. Like most markets, it comes down to stadium financing.
