Yes, lots of propoganda out there. Have they formed my opinion on it? No. Precisely because so much of it is propoganda. When propoganda appears, though, isn't it good for people to speak out against it? It does nothing but work against CRT, whether propoganda or real. Given that...I haven't really formed an opinion for or against CRT...because it's too hard to filter through all the crap and see what is actually being taught about it. My daughter seemed to have had CRT impacts on what she learned in college a few years ago...and it seemed to be being taught in a fairly objective manner, so I didn't have any problem with it. If you pay any attention to the right wing media, you get a completely different impression. Stuff like this fits right into that impression.

For that matter, if you took propoganda out of most things...you'd have nothing left. Pretty much everything you hear about anything is propoganda. Especially these days. Which gets back to calling out propoganda when it appears.

I really can't respect your position on this when you formed an opinion of CRT and claiming there is sincere concern from white people fearing CRT based on what most likely is a right wing false flag.

Are you at least going to take back you comments about using this as some data point to prove there should be sincere concern by white people in regards to CRT?

Yes there is propaganda in terms of embellishment of your arguments and premises. And then there is propaganda in terms of entirely creating strawmen and false flags to generate a narrative. The latter shouldn't chalked up as "merely standard propaganda that everyone does".

    Actually, I did: https://www.dallasjustice.org.

ie, it's not just the letter that is out there, but an entire website, at the very least. I had thought perhaps somebody just made up the letter, but that's not the case. At the very least, they created a whole website.

Now seeing links to Republican sponsorship on this (those didn't pop up when I first searched). If true, that's shameful, and happy to call them out on it.

You based validity of something by merely seeing a website exists for it? Really?

Like not an ounce of intellectual curiosity of who are the creators of the site, history of this alleged activist group? The fact that this was their very first action in their "activism" with zero history of activism from this group prior?

Did you read what I said? I did NOT form on opinion on CRT from this, or really anything I've been hearing, precisely because it all seemed like propaganda. Are there LOTS of people concerned because of stuff like this? Yes. Why do you think they put it out there?

To be clear: I am not against any accurate teaching of our history, good, bad, or otherwise. One might discuss when and how to teach such things, but I'm not at all against them being taught. I'm aware that there is LOTS of propoganda out there on this. a LOT of it isn't propoganda, though (although likewise might not really be a part of CRT, either)

SHOULD BE, based on this? No.

IS? Yes. People pay attention to propoganda all the time. Our entire political and media system is built on this premise. 99% of what everyone hears on any political topic is propoganda. FOX was blaring stuff like this all time. You think that has no effect?

Agree. Again, happy to call this out, if fabricated. Even the other propoganda is bad enough. Creating fictitious sites (if that is what this is) is, as I said above, shameful.

On an issue we don't need this type of stuff on.

The framing of the way you presented your statement here suggested that you agree that they SHOULD be concerned rather than "they are concerned because of being spammed with fake propaganda".

It doesn't help that you believed the "activist" page was real in the first place which makes it obvious that the statement I just quoted is suggesting white people "ought to be concerned" rather than "are concerned because of fake propaganda".

Similar to this? By similar do you mean a hoax? If you mean a hoax then you are right. There are always going to be some radicals on the margin, and oddly enough the group trying to give voice to the radical left isn't the left - it is the right, because they know they will lose on the issues unless they can push the radical left as the norm.

You fell for BS on this one, and there are many other reported cases that are the same....

Seriously? Like, you really think people have the time to track down every little piece of information out there. Hours and hours and hours each and every day?

It looked like it could be a prank. I googled it, and found the website, which seemed genuine. That same search didn't turn up anything that indicated it wasn't. My crack team of investigators didn't turn up anything else. No, wait, oops...I don't have a crack team of investigators to track all this stuff down any time I see something on the Internet....which would be a staff of hundreds, if not thousands.

My original thinking was that perhaps the memo itself was completely fabricated. That didn't seem to be the case.

Fwiw, the original poster I was replying to also didn't seem to have his/her crack team of investigators look deeply into it either...nor, I suspect, even have such a team, either. No one does.

10 seconds of scanning the site it raises so many red flags.

For example this is literally the only name associated with the entire site that I could find:

    michele@dallasjustice.org

No names of activists involved or the leadership of the organization.

The "blog" has like 3 entrees.

The entire site has literally nothing about any work they've done and the only thing that has any "content" on the site is the pledge itself.

Your initial intuition was correct. It's a fake group created by conservatives.

No, I don't mean a hoax, although I'm sure there are others out there.

I didn't 'fall for it'. Had I been spreading this around to others, then yes, you could say that. But, that's not what I did. All I did was add it to the many thousands of things I've heard about CRT. Which are true, and which are hoaxes? Don't know...which is why I don't spread them around.
Whether hoax or simply radical element, those that are on the fringe should be called out. So, I mentioned that when a poster did just that.

As for there always being radicals on the margin...true. Are too many of those being legitimized? Yes. On too many issues, the radical left IS becoming the norm. There was a time when the same was true on the radical right...and I called them out on it too. Still do. Any party that gives in the radical elements is moving away from the majority middle, which is never good politically. As such, I would think the radical left becoming too prominent would be an issue that Democrats would be concerned with; it's actually beneficial for Republicans. Just as being too far to their fringe was bad for Republicans.

As for the political implications...that depends on what actually is true and what isn't. But, to your point, if you have to make stuff up to advance your position, then that's certainly not a good sign.

You absolutely did fall for it. Spreading or not spreading it isn't the only criteria for "falling for it".

Believing it also means you fell for it and you from your own words you typed stated you believed it and then said that this is a reason why white people are concerned implying they ought to be concerned.

Fair enough. Still, though...hundreds of thousands of things out there, it's not really possible to investigate them all. Had something turned up in the google search I did, I'd have clicked on it, and seen what it said. Usually, when things like this are out there, someone else had indeed either retorted it or done some digging on their own, and you'll see that in the search. I didn't see such links. Was probably before they popped up.

Not saying people shouldn't do what you are advocating, just pointing out there is limited time in the day, and billions of web links out there.

I can understand initially believing it. But now after knowing it's fake you are now claiming you never fell for it and are now changing your premise from "white people OUGHT to be concerned" to "white people are concerned because of being spammed by propaganda".

I'm all out of nephews, Roy. I don't know what you and John need me to tell "the rest of them" if you can't provide any examples without pissing your coveralls.

OK, fair enough. ARE there sites out there that look just like that one, that are completely legitimate? Yes. The one the White House linked to, for example. So, was there good reason to think this was also legitimate? yes.

It is an example of why many whites are concerned, whether real or not. The reason there is so much propoganda out there is because it works. Doesn't need to be true.

When you mean other sites that "look like it" are you referring to appearance or rhetoric? Because I doubt the White House shared content stating that white people shouldn't attend ivy league schools and that all white people are complicit on racism unless they are activists.

The over the top rhetoric also is another red flag this is fake. It's a right wing meme parody of what they think CRT is.

This thread is a perfect example of why we're so ****ing ****ed. First, we have a ****ing "moderate Democrat" college professor post a pledge that looks like it comes straight out of a wingnut nightmare. I mean even the briefest examination should make you extremely suspicious. Then, credible evidence comes out that this is, in fact, a hoax. And not only does the OP never return to address the issue, but another ****ing "moderate" first cites the pledge as evidence for why white people should be/are (who ****ing knows) frightened by CRT and then justifies his first take with some incoherent rationale about how propaganda is effective and both sides or some ****, instead of just saying "my bad, I was fooled". Jesus ****ing Christ, but it's a struggle not to fall into despair daily.

As someone who has a deep right wing circle of former peers and friends who are all Facebook friends, this is a mere daily occurance on my Facebook news feed. I've stopped engaging with them on these issues a year ago and my mental health improved considerably. I still once in a while peek at my Facebook news feed and get depressed.

Debating this stuff with anonymous people is far better for one's mental health because I burnt a lot of bridges with former peers and friends once I pushed back on the political memes they kept on spamming. I had people who literally fight side by side with me in Afghanistan where years later due to some Facebook poo flinging told me they wished they left me in Afghanistan. Me fighting along side then was not enough to be considered "one of the good guys" because of political disagreement
