Brace for Higher Prices for Ice Cream, Tequila and Bottled Water
Food and drink companies say pandemic recovery is buoying sales but leading to higher costs for ingredients, packaging and transport

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/brace-...d-bottled-water-11627558364?mod=hp_lista_pos1

    excerpt

The makers of some of the world’s bestselling food and drink brands warned they would need to keep raising prices as they grapple with the strongest inflation in years.

Nestlé SA, NSRGY -0.62% Diageo DEO 0.92% PLC, Anheuser-Busch InBev SA and Danone SA DANOY -0.09% all said Thursday that sales were rising as key markets rebound from the pandemic, but that the recovery was also leading to rapidly increasing costs for ingredients, packaging and transport.

Nestlé said its ice creams had gotten more expensive, spirits giant Diageo has raised prices on brands like Baileys and Casamigos tequila, and Budweiser brewer AB InBev BUD -0.12% is exploring higher prices for its beers. Meanwhile, Danone, which makes Activia yogurt and Evian water, said it would increase prices across all of its categories to try preserve its profitability.

“We do expect price increases to accelerate from what you saw in the first half,” said Nestlé Chief Executive Mark Schneider. “After several years of low inflation, all of a sudden it accelerated very strongly starting in March and is continuing to accelerate.”

Companies across many sectors are contending with rising costs from coffee to aluminum and shipping as the recovery from Covid-19 gains steam. That is leading to higher prices for many goods, pushing U.S. inflation to rise at the fastest pace for more than a decade.

Toy Prices Are Going Up Ahead of the Holiday Season
Companies race to import enough toys for holiday shopping and try to pass along higher shipping costs

    By Omar Abdel-Baqui
    Updated July 29, 2021 1:11 pm ET

Logjams at seaports around the world are leaving some American toy companies scrambling this summer to ensure sufficient supply will reach retail shelves come this year’s holiday shopping season. The toys that arrive in time will likely carry higher prices.

Hasbro Inc., HAS +0.39% Mattel Inc. MAT +0.93% and other manufacturers say they are navigating supply-chain disruptions and rising costs for materials and labor, leading them to raise prices to recoup some of the added costs.

Toy industry veterans say this year’s disruption is worse than last year when the Covid-19 outbreak temporarily shut many ports, factories and stores. “In 2020, we thought it couldn’t get any worse, and 2021 said, ‘Hold my beer,’” said Joshua Loerzel, vice president of sales and marketing for Hog Wild LLC, a small toy company based in Oregon.

Ocean freight bottlenecks have led to long delays for shipping from China, where a majority of toys sold in the U.S. are made, and rates that are far higher than usual. The daily spot rate including premium surcharges for a 40-foot container from China to the U.S. West Coast as of Wednesday was $18,346, compared with about $2,680 last July and $1,550 in July 2019, according to the Freightos Baltic Index.

Hasbro, which outsources nearly all its production, says the company is using various ports and shipping lanes and sourcing more of its toys from various countries to avoid delays during the second half of the year. “I’m going to be a little less focused on exactly where the inventory is coming in, but rather that we have the inventories to meet the demand,” Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner told analysts this week.

Mattel, which owns several factories in Asia, said it was leveraging its geographically diverse manufacturing footprint to minimize the effect of freight bottlenecks. “There could be still unanticipated supply chain challenges, and it’s hard to tell what the future may hold,” Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz said in a conference call.

Retailers and toy companies typically agree on prices six months to a year in advance. Toy companies are now scrambling to renegotiate prices with retailers, said Mr. Loerzel of Hog Wild, which employs about 30 people. The size of a toy company will impact its negotiating success, he said.

“Obviously, we can’t sell stuff for a loss,” Mr. Loerzel said. He said the company’s new Handy Grabs item, which was priced at $14.99 when it launched earlier this year, is now selling for $17.99 at some retailers to help offset higher shipping costs.

Republicans don't buy Chinese products, so they shouldn't have this problem.

    Polaris Considers More Price Increases
After increases across its portfolio by an average of 2.5% in May, sports-vehicle maker weighs boosting prices further amid supply shortages, higher logistics costs

    By Mark Maurer
    July 30, 2021 8:00 am ET

Polaris Inc.’s finance chief is weighing additional price increases and adding suppliers as part shortages dent the sports-vehicle maker’s retail sales.

The Medina, Minn.-based manufacturer of motorcycles, boats and utility terrain vehicles in May raised prices by an average of 2.5% across its portfolio and could hike them again if needed, Chief Financial Officer Bob Mack said.

Like other sports-vehicle makers, Polaris in recent months has been battling shortages of key parts and commodities, such as semiconductors, specialty plastics and steel. It has also faced higher costs for shipping and raw materials, which have gone up as the U.S. economy continues to recover from the shock caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Polaris consumers currently have to wait six to 10 weeks for certain vehicles, Chief Executive Michael Speetzen said on an earnings call Tuesday. That is up from four to eight weeks during the previous quarter, Mr. Mack said.

The company’s cost of sales grew 32.8% to $1.57 billion for the quarter ended June 30 compared with the prior-year period. Polaris declined to provide an estimate of its extra costs due to inflation, but stated that the increases are significant.

“We’re spending a lot of time tracking all these costs to make sure that, as the environment normalizes, these costs don’t get baked into the long-term run rate,” Mr. Mack said.

The company is currently evaluating what prices to set for its products, including new ones it plans to launch in the second half of the year. It is also considering surcharges for transportation and commodity costs.

Boy you're just gonna keep pulling **** out of your ass. Harden will never win a ring, Trump was a corrupt piece of crap, and Biden is righting the ship. You have the mindset of a troll or child and need to educate yourself beyond your current media consumption.

What? None of that has to do with communism, half of it isn't even accurate or happening.

I don't know what to tell you. You can keep getting worked up over things that are imagined or try and do some more research. Good luck with whatever you choose

Yay! Affordable pricing for new homes! Many folks have been sitting tight waiting for lumber prices (and more materials) to return to normal so the price of building a new home is once again affordable and without major delays.
