Idk what to make of this at the moment. I understand they like Meyers. I also understand they didn't know Chas was going to better than Straw at the start of the season. I just feel like if your plan was to bring Meyers up, why do it 59 games before the post season?
This is the way I feel. Shows confidence already by their actions but @Nook confirming their confidence in this guy makes me that much more excited. Could have parabolically developed in 2020 without anyone realizing it and Astros know he is legit now with the season he is having. Not too mention he played at a big time program in college at Nebraska under Darrin Erstad. Dad was a coach and played ball as well. See below article about Meyers. Seems to have a good mindset and has good pedigree. Being 25 may help him with the spotlight but also keep in mind batting 8th trying to get on base once or twice a game and making plays in the outfield is not as high pressure as Yordan Alvarez in 2019 trying to bat cleanup. I think a lot of pressure will be off this kid and McCormick can fill in if he needs a breather. We should try and get another Vet OF in the mold of Maybin or Marisnick as many of these types of CF's are cut every year. Would be good insurance in case Meyers and/or McCormick falter or get banged up at some point. https://www.crawfishboxes.com/2021/6/15/22534272/astros-future-interview-jake-meyers AF: You played about 150 games in High-A, 24 in Double-A, missed the 2020 season and now you are in AAA. Has that been an adjustment going from 24 games in AA to AAA and was there anything you worked in 2020? JM: “Yea absolutely. The alternate site last year was just huge for me. I got a ton of reps with a ton of great coaches and players, especially at the higher levels and got to see some really good arms and really get comfortable with what I need to work on and just get better.” AF: So do you think not having the season might have actually benefited you from what you were able to work on rather than just playing in games? JM: “I mean it’s hard to know if it was better or worse but it definitely benefited me in the sense that I got the reps to see really good pitchers and got to work on what I needed to work on and get better.”
Red Sox and the White Sox did a great job upgrading their team. I think the White Sox has the edge if you ask me right now. Other than that, let's go.... 59 games to go.
I get it but it can take rookies 50 games to get comfortable. Bregman and Tucker weren’t instant hits. Gutsy move moving him up at the most important part of the season. He must be amazing
I too was waiting for a follow up move. But perhaps, Meyers is the real deal. Also, I know a few folks who wanted to starts Chaz over Straw. Meyers and Chaz definitely bring around more of a slugger mentality. Either way, Straw was a fun Astro to root for. I think he will have a nice career. He’s getting his confidence up and has established himself as a solid option in a ML lineup. Low slugging percentage, but a very respectable OBP. He’s near the top in SB too…. Will be fun to follow his progress in the former Astros thread!
I wonder if it feels as deflating for the team as it does for fans. Not that Straw can’t be replaced by McCormick (or Meyer), but because you’d like a contender to make moves that adds established players, not end up handing the position over in August to two guys with relatively little (to no) experience.
If they knew Jake was going to get the reps next year, and coming off immediate success with Yordan in 2019, the key might be the chance for a high upside hitting catcher, albeit at A level. In any event, we should have another JAKE defensive specialist in the outfield again.
The Astros must also really like Maton and think he’s going to be an asset for the next few years. More than just an incremental improvement. They didn’t have to trade their starting CF to call up Meyers, so they must think Maton figured something out with his recent improvement.
I see it going down like this: more at bats expose Chas and his inflated numbers, Myers small sample size in triple A of course doesn't translate to the big leagues during what I thought was a world series run. No back up plan.
