My fake, completely unfounded take is that Simone saw a another Olympic male athlete at the village. She crushed on him hard. Because she was busy with her olympic schedule, she was not able to profess her love. Then when she finally found time, she saw the boy hooking up with another female athlete on one of those hard to destruct, recyclable beds. She's so distraught by this, that she pulled out of the contest.

Most of these "amateur" athletes are teens or college age. I'm surprised Biles is an elder at 24, but having entire industries built around young adults with no one bringing up exploitation is always interesting. ...Cue in someone claiming they get sponsored so "a contract's a contract" yadda yadda yadda.

I guess the commentators are sending their own kids to college with said exploitation for them rail against it.

From an innocent pov, it's like your hs team advancing past state and national finals and into the worlds.

The more cynical view is that people don't care enough to stop sending the young to die in wars (when it's really "really" necessary...), and it's that same mindset we take in when consuming these athletes in their purest, most raw and unadulterated form at the highest possible level.

Rugby sevens is a fun sport to watch. These dudes are impossibly large to be running this fast.

I have more respect and empathy for her with the way she handled all around finals.
Hope she can get her head right.

I'm not a gymnast or an Olympic athlete but I've had the privilege of training with Olympians including a gold medalist in Judo. The amount of will and focus that it takes to even get to the Olympics is beyond what the vast majority of people can do. In the case of the Simone Biles to be a multi-time gold medalist is at the edge of human achievement.

With sports like Judo and gymnastics these are also dangerous sports. Lack of focus might not just mean losing a gold medal it could mean having to be carried off the mat not being able to walk again. On top of that the pressure of competition can get to any players. For example MVP and multi gold glover.

Simone Biles has 4 Olympic Gold Medals and 19 World Championship. Yes this is disappointing but she's already proven she is among the greatest. If she feels for her own health and safety she can't do it she's more than earned that.

Another story about mental preparation and what athletes do to prepare. A German Judo coach has been criticized for shaking and slapping his player before her match. The International Judo Federation (IJF) has issued a rebuke of the coach. The player though asked him to do it and as player I would slap myself before stepping on the mat and have had one of my players ask me to slap them before a match to get them going.

'Don't worry. It wakes me up': German Martyna Trajdos defends her coach after he violently shakes and slaps her before Olympic judo bout... as she insists she needs bizarre ritual to 'fire her up'

German judo athlete Martyna Trajdos has defended her coach for violently shaking and slapping her across the face before her Olympic fight in Tokyo.

Trajdos was competing against Hungarian Szofi Ozbas in the round of 32 for the women's 63kg category on Tuesday.

As she strode towards the mat, Trajdos stopped and turned to face her coach, Claudiu Pusa. He then grabbed her shoulders and shook her back and forth before giving a fierce slap to her left and right cheek.

he German then nodded and continued towards the mat for her fight.

The 32-year-old, who was European champion in 2015 and a world bronze medallist two years ago, was beaten by Ozbas - who claimed victory Waza-Ari.

The result eliminated Trajdos from the competition but the video of her pre-match ritual was picked up by cameras, leading some to be concerned for her welfare.

You don’t **** around with flips through the air and not being committed. No problem with her stepping away. Her legacy will take a small hit but really who is a better gymnast all time?

Depends on your criteria. From a pure talent stand point, she’s in a class by herself.
From total package? There’s a few women in her stratosphere.
In the men’s side there’s a few and the goat in Kohei Uchimura

I always felt bad for her. The London or Brazil Olympics, EVERYONE at the closing ceremonies stopping to take a selfie with her, she had the same smile, but my God, there's a time when you have to be able to get away and breathe.

All this finally got in her head---an Olympic Committee that put her in a bubble but with no shield against predators, round-the-clock training and diligence, media media media. You could see before she even entered preliminaries that the wheels upstairs were clack-, clack-, clacking.

Yes, that's what pisses me off. If it was my daughter in that situation? How did Bernie Mac put it? "If I run into this guy, there's going to be a misunderstanding. There's going to be some FURNITURE moving around in this place!"

Anecdotal, but I’ve had kids make camps and be around Nassar.
I never had a good feeling about the guy and would never let my kids see him. I didn’t let my kids go anywhere without me once they were in my care.

Oh him? Yeah he's a little out there... That holiday party... but his wife makes a mean devil food cake!

It was a weird deal man. Kids didn’t say much and if they said things it was written off as a medical practice.
So many medical professionals that come off as weird so he didn’t stand out so to speak.
I didn’t have a ton of contact with him but I just didn’t like him from a gut feeling. Kinda hard to say anything about “gut feeling”

I didn’t know the USC guy in any way.
Really there does need to be more protection for the kids, more people on their side.
That includes parents. Some of them are as bad as anyone
