Hey Fellas, I don't know about you guys, but I could use ONE non draft/trade thread. So I was wondering... It's 2021, Postionless basketball is HERE. Not only is it here, the Rockets are one of the team's who helped ushered it in. So as Rocket Fans... Why do we still use the basic format when talking about rosters. PG: STARTER/BACKUP SG: " " SF: PF: C: or... 1. STARTER / BACKUP 2." " 3. 4. 5. I see this all the time, and it always makes me wonder...why? We know for a fact this isn't how teams are constructed. We know that rotations do not work like this. So why do we keep doing it? Habit? Stuck in our ways? We're all guilty of it! So my question is why do we still do this? And Can we stop ourselves and get with the times?
My go to 1-5: 1. You're like a dream come true 2. Just want to be with you 3. Girl it's plain to see, that you're the only one for me 4. Repeat steps one through three 5. Make you fall in love with me
I also don't know why people talk about "second unit" when no team ever put all starters on the bench at the same time and bring in a second group of five players (except in garbage time).
FWIW, I conceptualise teams like this: Big Big Wing Wing Wing Ball Handler I then try to figure out what role they'd play on the team with terms like: ballhandler, glue guy, shooter, scorer, slasher, anchor, vertical spacer etc
As much as we can point to the Jokic, Lebron. Generously throw in Kawhi or future point-Zion. it's more of the exception than the rule. If go through all 30 teams; the majority (at least 70%) of the teams are still more of the tradition mold. The ones that count as "position-less" often just extend to 1, maybe 2 people on the team. Lakers could have a point forward like Lebron, but the other 4 guys are still more or less traditional roles. --Just the duties have been shifted around. In a small GSW lineup, Dreymond might be a shorter than your average center, but he's still doing center things. (box out / rebound / set screens / protect the paint) If we look at our team, we're more of a traditional mold. The guard are still traditional point (Augustine, Wall, KPj), the front court still the taller guys: Wood/Olynyk/Wilson...etc. Wood could bring the ball up at times, but the offense is run through the point guard. Point guard is not pass only, they can be a #1 scoring option. Shooting guard is not score only, they can playmake. Just the % of a guard's #1 duty and #2 duty are less skewed. Players are more versatile, not necessary a specialist all the time. So if you have two guards that have redundancy in skills, take the 'shorter guy' or take #1 playmaker and give him the 1, the other guard can be the 2. Terminology wise, it could be said that it's less position (than before) vs position less (no positions). On the numeric system, assigning numbers is still useful for drawing X's/O's. Can go old school: Lakers for example: 1 Schroder 2 Kuzma 3 Lebron 4 ...AD 5 ... (nameless center, because AD don't want to bang) Or if more to map based roles, a coach could do 1 Lebron 2 Schroder 3 Kuzma 4 ... 5 ... Point Giannis worked up to a point, and then when things got hairy in the playoffs, they shifted back to traditional, which worked out for them. Point Simmons worked OK in regular season, but if the point forward can't shoot, they let someone else ball handle and initiate play. Giannis is a 4, if Lopez on the court. He's a 5, in their switch lineup. Regardless if Giannis is the offense starter. It is skill based, as more bigs in league have guard skills, things can (and should) shift, but if we do a belle curve on 'point guard' skills among all the guards and bigs in the league, guards still win. Take that prefix just shift it to the actual playmaker on the team: Point guard, Point forward, Point Center.
That's very offensive. Almost as bad as intentionally fouling Simmons to put him on the line or getting under the skin of Draymond so he'd get a tech. Every player should be treated equal. Matter of fact, players should no longer be allowed to touch each other, guard each other in any way, or make comments to each other as that may hurt other players feelings. NBA should be a game of H-O-R-S-E and call it a day.
Because it’s not really positionless basketball. Players may be allowed to be more versatile and the game more wide open but for the most part the 1-5 is easily identifiable on most teams.
Non-sense Tillman Fertitta used to save a few bucks. You have to start understanding it as a distraction to a means. The shock and embarrassment had quite a few Rocket long timers leave for a reason.
heres another idea, what the rockets need to do besides the draft, trades? I mean look at the rosters of sac, pelicants, minny...they teams full of allstars players but going nowhere...drafting for potential or star potential is 100% wrong
3 n D stands for 3 point shooting and defense, not a small forward that can play defense. But I think that goes into your main point, "positionless" basketball does not mean role-less basketball. For example, we will still have a "point" something to denote who runs the offense. If you are a forward in an A-E world, better hope you are a "power" D vs a "small" D. Thoughts and prayers for stretch D.
