I've been getting pretty excited about him lately. I think the strikeout issues are a little overblown. He had a longer layoff than most players, and his swing and miss rate is actually pretty average at 11%, better than Meyers for comparison. Particularly as a short-levered guy, I think he can really improve as he settles in. For all the crap the Astros got about getting rid of scouts and losing the personal component, they have a number of guys that seem to have a great makeup that has helped them improve like Lee and Peña.
Down to a 17% K for July with a ridiculous line over the last 8 games (10.8% K rate, 18.9% BB %, 0.286 ISO, 0.478 BABIP). He has been a player of streaks so far with this his being his second rampage (10 games 1st half of June, 15%, 25%, 0.414, 0.350). One thing his AA coach had said was that Leon is still getting use to the every day schedule, and is going to have to learn how to bring it every day.
His strikeout issues is the only thing keeping him out of the majors. His swinging strike rate was over 14% the last time I checked. I thought I had I checked it about 3 weeks ago, but that would be a crazy drop in a 3-week period even with his hot streak. There should be no question on him being fast, able to get his power into games, and his arm.
If the Stros really have Ben Sheets and Kirby Puckett in our pipeline right now—when the farm is supposed to be depleted—then our WS window may just be open until 2040
https://peloterosintl.com/2021-prospect-luis-baez/ I found this article. Sounds like a really solid get for the Astros
Miguel Palma just hit his second homer of the season down in the FCL. Palma, a Venezuelan catcher who signed in the 2018 July 2 period, had a solid pro debut in the DSL in 2019 as he slashed .229/.373/.382 with four home runs. Also of note... Cody Deason is making his season debut down in Palm Beach. He turned in a solid year at both A levels in 2019, so he was likely headed to Corpus before his injury sidetracked him.
Yefri Carrillo came on to strand the two runners Deason put on base. Carrillo proceeded to throw 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on two hits (one of which was a solo homer), walked four, and struck out eight. In 21 innings this season, Carrillo has walked 16 and struck out 21... and has also allowed 6 hits.
Very excited about Deason coming back. Had TJ in 2020 and was my sleeper prospect after putting together a pretty impressive 2019 season across A and A+
Misael Tamarez vs. Kannapolis: 5 IP, H, BB, 7 K A second consecutive stellar outing for Tamarez, who struck out 8 over five innings of one-run ball last Friday. Tamarez signed in March 2019 out of the Dominican when he was 19.
Cristian Gonzalez and Yohander Martinez with a pair of hits for Fayetteville; Martinez has a two-run single. Don't know how long Gonzalez will hang around, especially with the draftees coming in, but that's nice to see.
Kyle Gruller finished off a 7-0 win by allowing one hit and striking out nine over the last four innings.
Uh...I think that was yesterday. Leon was 1-5 with 4 Ks tonight Also, don't look at the box score for the Skeeters' pitchers. YUCK
Victor Mascai hit his first homer for Fayetteville, giving him three home runs this year. That, unfortunately, is the only offense for the Woodpeckers so far as they're down 6-1.
