@D-rock how are you going to feel if the Rockets do end up drafted Green. I have seen a ton of posts from you denouncing Green. It is one thing to post pro-Mobley articles, but if you are posting negative Green stuff, and that is the pick, then what? I am pro-Green myself. But I don't post anything negative on Mobley. I like Mobley and if he is the pick then cool.
In most of his videos Jalen is the first guy to critique his defense. He knows what he needs to work on. He has shown in a small amount of time that he absorbs information and implements it on the court. It was even more evident in the GLeague where in only 14 games he was able to identify and correct different issues that plagued his game as a professional and by the end of the season was a better player then when it started. 14 games.
Not denouncing Green at all. I have criticized him, big difference in my mind. Just not a fan of the hype, like at all. Alpha, Idol, self comparisons to Kobe, killer attitude ... all the self promotion is a turn off. But I will fully support Green if he is the pick. I was not a fan of Porter's off field shenanigans but I fully embraced him as a Rocket, as long as he keeps his nose clean.
That video is from 2018, but it's definitely a good look. I'd love something like that, close ups on his shot, but more current. I found this , but the guy is basically analyzing just one shot (and it's not clear from when it is). I agree that it looks higher now, but low certainty cuz I don't get as good angles in those G-League highlights (and the sample size is small). Here , freeze at 1:55, you can get a good look at his form then. The shooting hand is not fully under the basketball. It's not a big deal if he continues to make them, of course. We have a famous football/soccer saying in Brazil: "there's no such a thing as an ugly goal, what is ugly is not to score". And Green's shot is not even ugly.
“He’s always said he wants to be No. 1,” said Green’s high school coach Brad Roznovosky. “He wants to be compared to Kobe. If you asked Jalen today, he can tell you that you’re crazy if you don’t take him No. 1.” https://lakersdaily.com/jalen-green...thinks-youre-crazy-if-you-dont-take-him-no-1/ https://www.essentiallysports.com/n...ryant-comparison-from-his-rookie-year-itself/
Look up some of his GLeague tape. Notice the elevation on the jumper and release point in comparison to those videos above. His mechanics remind me a bit of Ray Allen in that its robotic - same shot time after time regardless of distance. Its a really sweet stroke. Watch how in the GLeague he reduces his questionable foundation. It was obviously a point of contention for him and something that he took a concerted effort in trying to correct. edit: I think its healthy for Green supporters to acknowledge his deficits and expand the dialogue. Every contingent should try it instead of force feeding a Canon of why their guy is the best without ever taking the time to show how each player has taken steps to become better.
You can see he makes strides as the tournament progresses. He gets more confident with his moves. Hence why the second half of the highlight reel is more impressive and does show that high release point. He jumps high on his shot, has a high release point and has a quick trigger. All positive signs that he won't get his shot blocked often at the very least. The more I watch the second half of that reel the more I'm convinced my "raw rookie Jordan" comparison is more spot on and again, not in terms of level of potential greatness but style and attributes. He is a very creative finisher around the rim and has that Jordan like hang time with those double pump finishes. He also has a pretty similar shooting motion to Jordan and is just is on another level in terms of explosion to the rim.
I remember reading that, but wanting to be compared to Kobe and comparing yourself to Kobe are two separate things. It also may be context, if he says I want to be compared to Kobe when everything is said and done is one thing... if he's already making those comparisons to himself now is another. I'm sure we'll never get a direct answer from that comment since it was from his ex-HS coach but it would be interesting if he was asked and followed up on his own thoughts, during the draft process. I'm sure it'll come back up at some point soon enough.
I actually thought Booker needed to be more affirmative. "I am trying to be like Kobe" or the like. It's just so "insensitive" seeming to say that, and then there was a lot of twitter pushback given his (and CP3s) clutch stats this series that was like "never compare Booker to Kobe again!!!". Phoenix is missing that killer clutch player right now. And of course, half of Kobe was incredible defense, which Booker, and ANYONE else who wants to be compared to Kobe, needs to also have. In short, I have ZERO problem with Jalen wanting to be compared to Kobe, wanting hype or whatever. Only care about results. Best players in NBA history are regularly the most hyped. Even though a lot of hyped prospects also fail.
You are right. His shot is nothing special. Low release point, easy to get block. His 6'7" wingspan is average for SG. He shows flashes on step back shot to create space, so that's good. Dribble too high. Need to improve tighter dribble. He's not PG, I don't expect much playing skill from him. He did shows flashes on Harden like passes.
But how can this be? The Mobleyriders are adamant that all he can do is score and he's completely inept at passing or defending in any way. Guess those statements were right there with "advanced guard skills" and "top finisher in the NBA day 1..."
If you look at stats. Kobe is actually not clutch. He's not afraid to take those shots. Cade is going number 1. Out of Green, Mobley, Suggs, or others. I'm willing to take Green and hope him improved.
If going to compare to Kobe, that defensive dog mentality is key. Just like MJ. Both 2 way goats. Being elite both ways is critical to these comparisons IMO.
Yeah, im aware of that. His % wasn't great. But he was definitely a killer mentality. Hey, at least he got shots off (instead of turnovers!)... and he did make many of them, even though he missed many more in the clutch.
Absolutely!! Im nowhere near as down on Green defensively as some. Like I watched his games early on and was like dud'e trying, he actually is staying in front of guys often, he's getting steals. That said... that doesn't mean its not a concern... because while he's trying, there's still lots of room for improvement, especially in team schemes (though this is the area he actually improved the most on i think throughout the year compared to high school)... AND, more to your point, mentality. Like I think he wants to be the best of the best, so because of that, he'll put a lot of effort into defense and improving... HOWEVER, i don't think he naturally has that defense can be just as important as offense mentality... eg. he's clearly an offense first player by far.
