Hell even Austin is fighting to "Stay Weird" If Texas had better filming incentives . .. . Hollywood would be killing it here (Which is why AbButt and nem are against them) Rocket River
One last temper tantrum by the most spoiled and entitled generation of all time. It won’t last because they won’t last. They’re dying or becoming debilitated by the thousands daily due to a lifetime of excess. Citing president cheeseburger certainly doesn’t worry me. Modern medicine is miraculous but heart disease is still the number one killer, followed by cancer.
I’m not really worried about the right. They’re mainly short fat losers that are either poor or grew up with daddy’s money. We will be fine.
Not now, not ever. Marginalized groups' rights pretty much all come from federal rulings and legislation. Even the most liberal of states or cities are still run by conformist, traditionalist land-owning whites who yank the chain once there aren't federal marshalls and case law to reign them in.
This is more along the lines of what I'm thinking will happen. The right's goal is to sow distrust in the system and they did a good job in 2020. Fortunately, all our elections were run by mainstream people in 2020. But they are now running candidates that believe this crap in 2022 and on, so if they start getting these crazies elected in positions like Sec of State, the institutions can easily be destroyed from within. Imagine if GA or AZ Sec of States aligned with their legislatures and randomly claimed there was fraud in the elections or were unwilling to certify (like the GOPers in Milwaukee (?) tried) and precipitated a Consititutional Crisis. I don't think we have a violent civil war coming, but I do think we could end up moving towards a banana republic to some degree with corrupt elections and the like. I would say the 2022 elections will be super consequential, but even if the crazy GOPers lose, it doesn't appear they'd change course in 2024. The whole party is now beholden to the "any election we don't win is corrupt" line and they've convinced their supporters of the same. I don't know how you fix that.
I'll repeat what I've said in other threads. A civil war like what we had in the 1860's is very very unlikely. If TX were to secede Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso wouldn't go along with it. Atlanta wouldn't go along if GA did same with the Raleigh Durham in NC and certainly not the suburbs of DC in VA. Richmond the capital of the old Confederacy wouldn't go along with it. If you look at economics consider how much handwringing there was over the MLB moving the All Star game out of Atlanta along with Coca Cola and Delta. Do you think any of those companies will be fine with keeping headquarters and other major facilities in a new Confederacy? Secession will likely lead to civil war within those states rather than actually a war between blue and red states. What we could very well see isn't a war between the states but things like massive protests within states turning violent. We could see things like what happened on Jan. 6th happening at many state houses by groups on both sides. We could see sectarian fighting between groups and to varying extents state officials tacitly supporting those groups like what we saw in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. None of those are good but seeing a new Gen. Lee lead a 21st Century Army of the Virginia on an offensive into the North is the stuff of fantasy.
Half of Americans don't even vote. Half of Americans are too fat and lazy to bother to pick up a weapon to defend themselves, much less choose violence to fight for a belief. Most Americans are too selfish and greedy to even bother to upset their way of life, much less give their life. It's safe to say we are pretty far off from a civil war.
This pretty much nails it. A few right wing fringe nuts like on 1/6 aren’t going to spark a civil war. That being said I do agree with Major’s comment. Republicans are now in the any election we lost must be fraud mindset. That’s dangerous. So far the courts have worked all those cases thrown out with no fraud found. The question becomes what happens when a right wing Sec of State or legislature does decide to overturn a Democrat win. Then the Dems sue. Will the Court rule in favor of the Dems?
I'm not about to fight and kill people because of national politics. It honestly doesn't affect my personal day to day all that much. I will vote, and if state/municipal politics starts affecting my day to day life too much then I will just move.
Well, number of covid dead in the US is about to exceed number of dead in the civil war. Just some perspective.
What crazy is conservatives lose at everything. No new self made billionaires, mostly suck at sports, suck at the arts, are too short to grab the cereal off the top shelf etc., would be used to losing by now.
@rocketsjudoka hit it. A modern Civil War would not be a clean recreation of times past. It would be a messy, multi decades long, intrastate affair. As such, it's impractical. You can't fight an actual civil war when there's no clean divisions. All you would end up with is a bunch of sectarian skirmishes and riots for years on end. Perhaps years and years later after those small scale conflicts have resolved and all the dissenters have been driven out of State X you could start to see secession become a real possibility. But that's so far off we can't even see it with binoculars.
