Cornel West not being granted tenure at Harvard="shadow of Jim Crow"

When your narcissism is encouraged by traditional and social media, I suppose this is what results. The"shadow of Jim Crow" didn't stop him from bouncing back and forth for decades between positions at Harvard and Princeton. It's not implausible that his political advocacy, including for the Palestinians, played a role in Harvard's refusal to give him tenure (although, recall, they did offer him a multi-year contract). More likely, of course, is that (1) he hasn't done notable academic work in awhile, and (2) he was a victim of age discrimination (he is 68). I bet he could prevail on a lawsuit over the latter!

I don't know about all of the details of his tenure.

Cornell West is an incredibly smart professor and addresses issues from a well thought out and evidenced POV.

He's also a thoughtful Christian and speaks openly of his faith. He's also a socialist.

I like almost every thing about the man.

his book about American pragmatism is fantastic and a lot of what he's done over the course of his career has been very good. On the other hand he is 68 years old and has not done much recently. He has also left Harvard previously and I believe he gave up his tenure when he left. I also know that many schools are scaling back on the number of tenure-stream positions they have available. So it's hard to say whether the Divinity School is simply playing hardball with him or they are themselves up against some hard constraints in terms of funding.

Yes, it could be. I read a bit about it when I first heard that he was changing Universities but I didn't dive in very deeply so I'm not totally familiar. I won't weigh in on it since I'm so ignorant.

Didn't know when freeway construction went underway, black neighborhoods were in particular targeted for construction over white neighborhoods. In fact they were used as dividing lines to further separate already segregated neighborhoods from one another. It makes sense to me when I look at Austin and think of what East Austin is like compared to much of the rest of the city before gentrification was a thing in that area as there is clearly a dividing line where I-35 was built. Or 290 construction even as that cuts right through Congress and S. First, which is where mostly Hispanic families used to live, again up until gentrification took over that area and teardown lots started being sold for over $600,000.

rep for John Thompson says systemic racism is behind all the charges against Thompson

    https://minnesotareformer.com/2021/07/18/thompson-says-he-wont-resign/

    excerpt

Following news of a traffic stop that put his Minnesota residency in question, Fox 9 reported Friday on several domestic abuse allegations where Thompson was accused of assaults between 2003 and 2010. But his former campaign manager, Jamar Nelson, who is working with Thompson, said on Sunday that Thompson does not intend to resign.

“John Thompson was elected in November to do the will of the people and as a legislator that’s what he has gotten right to work and done,” Nelson said in a press release. “These latest malicious accusations are an attempted political distraction orchestrated by both parties and an amplified showing of systematic racism and has no bearing and he’s doing the people’s work.”

Since Rep. Thompson has been brought up I'm going to point out that the Tim Walz, Democrat governor, along with Democrat leaders of the MN State House are calling for Thompson's resignation. They aren't excusing his actions or looking the other way regarding his actions.

Minnesota DFL leaders call on Rep. John Thompson to resign

Top Minnesota Democrats including Gov. Tim Walz and House Speaker Melissa Hortman are calling on Democratic State Rep. John Thompson to resign.

In a series of statements Saturday afternoon, Walz, Hortman, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler and Minnesota DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin referred to a Fox 9 story published Friday which uncovered several past domestic abuse allegations in which Thompson was accused of assaulting women, in some cases with children present.

Thompson, who denies the allegations, already was facing scrutiny related to a recent traffic stop in which he presented a Wisconsin driver's license. His attorney said Sunday that Thompson, a first-term representative from St. Paul, does not plan to step down.

The statements from Walz and other DFL leaders were sent minutes apart on Saturday.

"The alleged acts of violence against multiple women outlined in these reports are serious and deeply disturbing," Walz wrote. "Minnesotans deserve representatives of the highest moral character, who uphold our shared values. Representative Thompson can no longer effectively be that leader and he should immediately resign."

"As a mom, advocate for children, and survivor and child witness of domestic violence, I know the deeply traumatic impact of the actions outlined in reports against Representative Thompson," Flanagan wrote. "Someone who has allegedly demonstrated this violent pattern of behavior, especially in the presence of children, is unfit to serve in elected office. Representative Thompson must resign."

In a joint statement, Hortman and Winkler wrote that "Representative Thompson ran for office to advance progressive policies, but his recent actions, and unacceptable reports of abuse and misconduct, have become an impediment to that work."

Republican House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt also issued a statement Saturday, calling Thompson unfit to serve and saying that "House Republicans have prepared additional ethics complaints that will be filed Monday in the event Representative Thompson does not resign."

A message left with Thompson on Saturday was not returned.

But Thompson’s attorney Jordan Kushner issued a statement on Sunday saying that Thompson "challenges the authenticity of the police reports" about the alleged abuse.

"Mr. Thompson and his wife — the only person whom Mr. Thompson would have been with at the times of the incidents — categorically deny that any of the inflammatory allegations ... ever occurred. Mr. Thompson's wife further does not recall and does not believe she ever made such allegations. They have been together as a couple for more than twenty years, have worked through issues earlier in their relationship, and have a solid marriage."

The statement went on to say that "it is unfathomable that the many people digging into Mr. Thompson's past would not have found those police reports before the November election much less during the ensuing months,” and claimed that the reports “are a product of the campaign to silence an American African man who speaks out against powerful and abusive interests, and not the product of any effort to uncover truth.”

Nope, pedo sex assault jokes still off limits. The disappointment and her terrible timing dropping out doesn't wash it over. She and hundreds others didn't ask for that while making people like him feel better.

But I eagerly hope to see an evolution of his comedy game by rebooting dead baby jokes with famous celebs who've had miscarriages.

One thing that always gets a HUUUUUUUUGE Laugh is when people who seldom beleive claims of racism and don't understand the claims that well in the first place, start making jokes and oh so humerously asking if every criticism is one of racism. Or when they mine comedy gold and just accuse random things of being racism to make a supposed point.

    The laughs never stop.

I think the issue is comparing her to Nassar. What did the joke have to do with racism?

The irony is your false accusation is an example of why a lot of people don't take claims of racism at face value.

No that isn't why people don't take claims at face value.
