Yes the first great extinction event was the Oxidation of the atmosphere without which complex multicellular life might not have lived. It's theoretically possible even if we had a nuclear war that wiped out most of the life as we know it might make space for some other species. The increased radiation might even prove beneficial to those species that are more tolerant of radiation or lead to mutations that allow it to differentiate and take over the Planet. All that said since we evolved along with the plants and animals that we depend on in a very narrow climate and biological range we might not survive such changes.
They're trying to secure voters. It's a simple math formula for the GOP. They know a general amount of Republicans that will vote for them no matter what. To win elections, they need to secure more voters, which they do by appealing to racists, christians, anti-vaxers, etc. while simultaneously trying to disenfranchise the opposition (poor & minority voters)

France has its own anti-vaxxer problem, and I was pretty glad to see my other country taking such a forceful vaccine policy. And appointments have increased as a result. France has a different culture from the US when it comes to conforming for the public good. I don't always like it (the rules about public expression of faith are the most galling to my American self), but Covid is a great place to demand widespread compliance.
