Tate is a classic tweener. He’s an undersized 3. He can’t shoot and he’s gonna have trouble staying with faster guards. He plays his best ball close to the basket. yes he has the biggest heart on the team and could develop as a shooter, I would not count him out. But I think he’s gonna end up being a PJ Tucker type player. Stud role player. Nothing wrong with that, but if you think you’ve got a potential star player available at the end of the lotto, I think you pull the trigger. We would be well advised to keep swinging for those franchise changing players and really take advantage of the next year or two to lock in our building blocks. We need a lot more talent on this team.
That's fair, but even if Tate never got better he is still absolutely great on defense and hustle. And I doubt he wont get more comfortable and things will start to slow down for him. He is a bigger and better version of Pat Beverley I think. I agree, if we had to part with Tate or KMJ as much as it would hurt it have to be Tate, but those defensive glue guys aren't that easy to replace. Remember Ariza....
The other aspect is the rookie contract. It will be 4 years before we have to pay a rookie. Tate may require a big pay raise 2 years from now. If not, then he didn’t pan out. Same with Wood. I’d trade Wood and Tate to GSW for Wiseman, 7 and 14 plus a future first. I think Wiseman may be a bust, but at least worth a gamble.
I wonder how you could fit Gordon into the deal. Gordon, Wood and Tate would have them primed for another championship run. I'd hate to see them win another ring, but if they give us enough assets I don't even care.
Yeah but in a way that's every player. Eventually these guys are going to get paid, and if we want to win again in the future I am totally fine with paying Tate. I wouldn't trade Wood, he is about to break out and much less to GSW... Hell nah...
If Gordon, Wood and Tate can give them a chip then they can help us get back to winning. I wouldn't gift GSW a chip for a shot and unlikely opportunity of drafting a Gordon, Wood and Tate caliber players. Wood averaged 21 ppg last season, Mobley will most likely be nowhere near that next year....
This is where I'm at with Tate's game and Tucker's a perfect example. Tate is a guy you add when you have a championship contender and need to add a final piece or 2. This isn't where the Rockets are at this time. If there's a guy at 13 Stone likes then swing for the fences.
Those guys would help them get back to contention because they have Steph, Klay and Draymond but they've lost all of their depth. I am not suggesting any of those guys would lead them to a championship. Not by a long shot. Just that the depth would help them get back there. I don't mind keeping Wood and Tate, but if you could get something like the package the poster I was responding to suggested, you do it in a heart beat. We have Wood and Tate for 2 more years before they will expect to get paid. I think Tate will be a solid roleplayer for his career and I do think he can contribute to a winner. I think Wood is fragile and will never be reliable. He is who I really want to see traded while he still has value. If we wait even another year teams start talking that, "but we can just sign them in free agency and lose nothing" stuff. So we really just have until the next deadline to trade either of them. We aren't going to have a chance to win until, at soonest, both of those guys have expiring contracts. So I say trade them while we can still get assets for them. Don't lose them for nothing when somebody is willing to pay them to go to a better situation.
Not a bad suggestion, impossible to know if it's the right move. The contracts are better if I remember correctly or maybe that was changed. Keep in mind though, the Rockets could run out of roster spots. We had 0 picks last year and walked with 2 rotation players. I really liked what I saw from KJ at the end of the season and Tate's production was All-Rookie. Then we draft 4 more players this year and that doesn't include getting the next KJ(bought 2nd rounder) or Tate. Rockets typically like to snatch up lots of undrafted players after the draft. 6 players that would be 1st or 2nd year players might be a bit much, and that would be the minimum. The only scenario that I don't believe in going "full process", is if the Rockets can put together a solid young core now that grows together. If we could somehow get to solid prospects, then I think we could emulate the Durant Supersonics route that got a bunch of young talent that grew together. On the other side of that coin, even the Supersonics ran out of options bc it took too long. They had to choose who to pay. The rest was Morey history. This is easily the most exciting draft I have ever seen as a Rockets fan, I'll be happy with anything except cost cutting moves from Tilman. I'll be furious if he cashes in picks to unload salary.
Welp, who knows what The Rockets will look like in 2 years.... Its crazy how things change all of a sudden, lets see if Stone can get it done with Wood then. If we keep Tate I think its worth paying him in 2 years anyways...
Oh we're still going to suck over the next two years. Over half of our team next year is going to be 21 and younger. Teams like that don't win. And I wouldn't be opposed to paying guys like Wood or Tate if we have at least a superstar talent (and preferably two), but if we don't I would prefer we don't blow our cap on roleplayers. I'd like to be in the mix when guys like Zion or Luka are free agents. And if we can gather enough young talent, we can be.
I'm fine with going after a swing for the fences type of player like Jalen Johnson. I do see more safe players than potential stars at 13. If Sengun was stronger and more athletic, I wouldn't hesitate to offer Tate and the 24th.
I'm looking at Sengun,Johnson,Murphy,Jones at 13. All add badly needed size and are young with big upsides. IMHO I also would look at buying a 2nd rd pick and picking Herbert Jones. A defensive wing who's 6'8 can handle the ball some, shoot a little and is a top tier defender. He just needs to get better at shooting his free throws. He's kinda like House.
I am the same way these are good players.. keep them...pay them under the table if needs be to get to sign them on discount and have more cap flexibility
Tate is underrated. The forced tanking really got yall fooled about Tate's value. Tucker makes Tate look like Booker offensively. I don't know how many times I wanted Tate out the game because he was going to ruin the tank
A good backup center, PG and #10? Not a bad return. But who do we get at 10? Truth be told any one of those trades, whether it be Indiana or New Orleans, would be good.
