I think Abreu has significantly more value than Paredes. I would be willing to give up both but the return would have to be high. Abreu and Paredes should be enough to get back a controlled established late inning RP like Jose Cisnero or Scott Barlow. I wouldn’t want to give up those 2 for a rental like Iglesias or Kennedy.
Some random site had 3 moves to help the Astros improve their chances at a World Series. Would you guys do any of these. 1) Kimbrel and $2 million for Hunter Brown, Colin Barber, and Bryan Abreu Kimbrel will help for sure but I'm a fan of Barber and Abreu. Would rather have someone else in a deal. 2)Paul Fry for Tyler Ivey, Zach Daniels, and international slot money. 3)No trade offer but suggested Yan Gomes because he has a better bat than Maldonado. Apparently not as good on defense.
I think it is going to be hard to predict what prospects teams will want because of missing the minor league season last year. The pre-season prospect rankings don't mean a whole lot right now.
I do not think the Astros would be interested in a poor defensive catcher. Doesn't seem to be their style. Paul Fry walks over 4.5 batters per 9. We have a multitude of guys who can do that. Also not sure anyone wants Ivey at this point since who knows when he will pitch again. Would love Kimbell. He is having a great year. But not at that cost. Just personal opinion, but I think Abreu is going to get it together soon and then watch out.
You have to get Kimbrel if he is available. Best chance at a World Series and you never know when it will come around again. Do you miss the guys from Zach's deal?
I was just telling my daughters yesterday about how we got Yordan and Bagwell. I’d love Kimbrel but I’m not for a hyper-aggressive trade for a reliever. I’d give up one of the three he mentioned plus a secondary prospect or a couple of AAAA guys. Our starters will do the heavy lifting in the post season and I have faith at least two of Abreau, James, Taylor, Stanek or Baez will round into form as reliable 8th inning guys.
I don't really see Kimbrel as an Astros target. Neither the Astros or Rays have a history of acquiring 'brand name' relievers. The Rays have recently been acquiring guys with crazy stuff and almost no service time. With the tax line being so close, I suspect they'll try to mimic the Pressly trade where they acquire the reliever they want and think they can improve and control for the next few years.
1. Do NOT give up Brown or Barber much less both for a reliever. If they were going to give up one for Kimbrel, I would want it to be Barber and expect Chicago to eat all of Kimbrel’s remaining 2021 salary. 2. This would be a good deal for Houston but I doubt Baltimore would accept it. 3. Nope, Houston is fine at catcher.
All 4 guys would be contributing in Houston. Rojas is a borderline star and would likely either be the starting CF or in a super utility role poised to take over for Correa at SS next season. Bukauskas and Martin would likely be in Houston’s BP right now and both guys have elite ceilings there. Beer would be Houston’s 1B of the future and likely one of their 5 best prospects. The Greinke trade was worth it but not some slam dunk. The Diamondbacks made out well in that deal considering the salary they dumped.
This is his first full season and he’s been an above average hitter capable of playing 7 positions. He’s already put up 1.3 fwar and projects to finish the season with 2.1 fwar. I’m not putting much stock in 41 games his rookie year immediately after a trade and 17 games in the pandemic year. Being a 3+ win player (my arbitrary cutoff for “star” label) is very possible and being an above average everyday player (2-3 fwar, or “borderline star”) is at this point a likely outcome.
I don't think many people get that the money (i.e., opportunity cost to spend it elsewhere) is usually the big get when trading away a player. Just for this season, that $25M could have paid for CFM and Hand for the Astros.
There are always going to be examples where prospects end up contributing… but they don’t all make it. Nobody should have remorse about trading guys for help now, especially when the window is as open as ever. It definitely sucks if you lose a future star, but other than Hader, the Astros really haven’t been on the long-term losing end of a lot of deals (including the voted in Teoscar in that analysis)… just wait till you trade a future HOF 1B for a middle/long reliever.
He hasn't proven to be anything close to a star yet, and he is already 27. Bukauskas & Martin have both sucked. They may turn it around, and maybe Rojas is on a Ben Zobrist type path, but honestly, they'd all be in Sugarland.
Laureano Rodriguez for cash Add Hader, Laureano, and Rodriguez to this team and the Astros have the best lineup ever, close to the best starting rotation this year, and the best bullpen. Not saying all trades are bad. Though, trading prospects for small improvements can have big repercussions.
Nah. There is zero chance Rojas would be in AAA behind Robel Garcia, and he almost certainly wouldn’t beaten out McCormick for the 4th OF role. And zero chance Bukauskas would be in AAA behind guys like Scrubb. Martin would be in AAA but would probably be one of the top 5 prospects in Houston’s system.
Abreu will be interesting to watch. He was getting several high leverage spots prior to his injury stint. I think our FO is (rightfully so) high on him. He looked solid last night. Him panning out would be so big. Needs to become more consistent with location. While a championship roster cannot sit around and wait for an elite setup man to figure it out, he could very well be the lowest cost answer...I think we are interested in Kimbrel but also want to wait to see how our late innings arm fare in July. At a certain point we may need to bite the bullet to shore up the pen, even if it hurts in the future.
