There's been talk of Matthew McConaughey or Beto O'Rourke on the D side. Now there are potential challengers to Greg Abbott on the R side. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/po...st-is-running-for-texas-governor-16293069.php
This is exactly why Abbott went super Trumpy about a year ago. He knew he was getting primaried from the right. I seriously doubt McConauhey is going to run. His business people will finally convince him it’s a terrible idea and he’s got many more years left of making pretty good movies. Pre Covid the guy was landing pretty much anything he wanted. I just don’t see anyone leaving that, but maybe it is 100% out of love for Texas. If he does run though as an independent I think Beto and the Dems have to ultimately consolidate behind him if he runs a successful early campaign which we’ll see. The opportunity to have even an independent Governor in Texas is huge. Even if they’ll be conservative on some issues. I don’t think Beto or another progressive Dem can win just yet unless it’s one who can surge Hispanic turnout.
i hope to god that beto doesnt run. i dont dislike the guy (although i do think he is a dork), but he is damaged goods in politics. too many people dont like him and will never vote for him. plus he is a job chaser and keeps losing elections. its a bad look. if an independent decides to run then the dems need to just sit it out b/c all they will do is split the vote and hand the election to the republican. greg abbot is pathetic and its obvious that he has gone full-on trump-kiss ass in order to save his political future. its shamefull that an entire party has totally given itself over to a cult of personality towards a literal traitor to our country, but thats where the GOP is at now. its all about the primary - you have to go full on trump-cult member to win your own party and thats what is happening on the state and national level. again, who can be the biggest kiss-ass towards a literal traitor who only 6 months ago incited a violent insurrection against our government.
Biden could change that narrative by at least trying to slow down illegal immigration. Finish the fencing and deploy troops at the border...make a show of it and the other side can't really complain anymore.
He's also one of the most vocal proponents of gun bans. He's never going to win an election in Texas.
It might seem unusual that Matthew McConaughey would run but remember Jesse Ventura won in Minnesota 20 years ago. Have a message people buy into then you never know
Don't want to derail, but it's a lot more complicated than that. In fact, Biden has accelerated Title 42 deportation to levels Trump never did. It's mostly optics and less facts for the left and right media and the blowhard politicians who make tv cameos. For the policy nerds, it's just messy, has always been messy and remains messy. Stephen Miller would be pretty happy about the current Title 42 numbers.
Ventura won because the Democrat was unpopular and if his last name wasn't "Humphrey" wouldn't have been the nominee. Ventura also took a votes from Republicans and also brought in a lot of new voters. Mostly male white working class voters. The Republican party isn't what it is used to be and certainly not in Texas. Also many of those male white working class voters are Trumpists and will likely stick with a Trumpist Abbot than go with a moderate McConaughey.
Anyone? You know who's running in the primary against him, right? Both of those guys are totally batsh!t nuts.
texas politics is like the NBA 20 years ago. the real championship took place in the western conference finals (GOP primary). the finals (state election) were really just a formality the western conference (GOP) winner had to go through to claim their crown.
