Of course they did, but not to this extent now that AAA has drastically altered their scheduling to cut down on travel...SL plays only 12 games against teams outside of the 4 division foes (RR, OKC, ABQ, ELP). I was just pointing out that playing 25% of your games (as of now) in launching pads will naturally skew some stats.
In Cuba, he was striking out at 12%, and he's at 17% for June. I think Matijevic is doing the same thing Nova was doing...just taking a bunch of pitches (so many called strikes) and capitalizing on minor league pitchers lack of control. I am not very bullish on Matijevic. The age works against Gonzalez regarding odds of potential star status, but should not preclude him from getting called up and helping the team even if it is only as a bench bat. Caveat: I don't care much about upside unless there is a decent chance it actually happens. For instance, Perez has a better chance of being a good player than Norel Gonzalez. Norel Gonzalez has significantly better chance of being a below average MLB player, but still sticking.
The GCL/FCL roster is updated and it has a sick amount of position player talent for a complex league team that doesn’t even have draft picks yet. Several guys are skipping the DSL entirely. Juan Santander was a big bonus catching prospect I am pretty high on. Several 6 digit bonus infielders with huge physical upside: Narbe Cruz, Cristian Gonzalez, Ricardo Balogh Big bonus infielders in Yorbin Cueta and Dauri Lorenzo Richi Gonzalez is a very athletic OF skipping the DSL. He joins 6 other 6 digit bonus OF in Pinto, Cortabarria, Carrillo, Machandy, Perez, Uceta, and Rivas.
The roster is deep enough but on the FCL website it now only has one team on the schedule, so I’m not sure.
Would someone in the know update the Astros Farm? I have: AAA Sugarland Skeeters AAA West (East Division) AA Corpus Christi Hooks AA Central (South Division) A+ Ashville NC Tourists High A - East (South Division) A Fayettville AR Woodpeckers Low A - East (Central Division) Unknown FCL/GCL 1 or 2 (Rookie? Fl?) Florida Complex League? 1 or 2 (Short Season? NY?) Astros Orange? and Astros Blue?
I would imagine (hope) that's just a website oversight. There's no way they can have 50+ players on the current roster and then add a draft class while having only 1 rookie level team.
The DSL roster does not have the most recent signees on it, but now that the GCL roster has been updated we have a really good idea of what it’ll look like: C: Carlos Arcila, Ricardo Toro, Fernando Caldera* IF: Ayendy Ortiz*, Leosdani Molina, Luis Encarnacion, Yamal Encarnacion, Josue Payano, Danyuri Guzman OF: Jairo Jose, Tomas Ramirez*, Brayan Nolasco, Daniel Familia, Everette Cooper*, Christopher Morales*, Luis Perez, Denfry De La Cruz P: Jose Andujar, Juan De Los Santos, Freilyn De Pena, Marcus Eusebio, Juan Figueroa, Ricardo Leon*, Abel Mercedes, Johangel Ramirez*, Cesar Rojas, Darwin Rosario, Alimber Santa, Juan Soto, Danny Subero*, Miguel Ullola, Elvin Villega, Richel Del Rosario, Eurys Martich * indicates significant (6 figure) bonus. Not a ton of talent there as most of the best guys from the last 2 international classes were skipped over to the GCL.
Really weird divisions - 20 teams in three divisions (E) 6, (N) 6 and (S) 8. 5 MLB teams have 2 affiliates. 4-5 team divisions makes more sense.
Who knows, things have been so wonky with that league there may have been some scheduling or paperwork glitch that prevented them from having a 2nd official team. But I agree with 50 players on the current roster and another 19 about to be added via the draft, surely they expected to have 2 rosters. Although it wouldn't surprise me if most of their draftees didn't play in the official complex league games and instead focused on resting/rehab/development.
The last two lines should be 1/2 team for Florida Complex League (1 confirmed but 2 rumored) 0/1 team for DSL (0 confirmed but 1 rumored) Prior years, the Yankees and others have run 2 complex league teams, so I am 51% sure that the Astros will too.
As @Snake Diggit notes, there are only 20 rounds to the 2021 MLB draft, not the usual pre-covid 40. Back when there were 40 rounds, the Astros would send ~2 HSers to the FCL, 15 to Greeneville (lower drafted rounds), 15 to Tri-City (higher drafted rounds), and ~3 to lower A (top 5 picks, not from HS, likely not a pitcher). With the new structure all but a handful of the 2021 draft will head to the complex. This makes a lot of sense. I suspect that draftees will be benefit from time at the Astros complex, learning the Astros hitting/pitching "way".
Jeremy isn't the tiny kid they drafted anymore... he has drastically changed his body, and his bat is drastically better.
I like that jump, Korey Lee is making me do positive double take on him! Whitley may benefit with a little pressure being taken off of him. He's falling in the national prospect listings, but it's probably more to do with his injuries, than his ability (his last showings were weak, but this is the minor leagues where many times pitchers are working on a particular area, and coaches know they might get slapped around a little).
Except he just got set back by almost a full year, hand/wrist surgery is no laughing matter for a baseball player. We'll see.
Agreed, a wrist injury is serious... I was only saying that he came a long way as a player and prospect. He really transformed his body and mechanics. He was being used as an example of Luhnow loving a soft hitting middle infielder, and not sure that label fits anymore. I saw him in person and he is not a pretty big guy and clearly has taken care of himself. I wish he could talk to Martes and explain basic nutrition to him.
That's another topic for later, I know we've talked about it several times before, but I want some serious thoughts from serious people. Just not right now. Watching Euroball.
