Being a hypothetical elite defensive center and skinny is a bit different than an offense first guard. A guard that competed against stiffer competition. If Mobley played in the G League and put up the same numbers then it wouldn’t be a question.
Haha. I like Barnes too. If we had one more young wing/backcourt player on our roster with legit top-end scoring potential other than KPJ I'd be open to considering Barnes over Green. I favor Green a decent bit now over Barnes, though. I favor Mobley over Barnes too, but for different reasons.
Mobley and Green are unanimous top 3 players for a reason. But Barnes will be a perennial all star once he develops his long ball. Not only does he have guard skills at 6'8 230 with 7'3 wingspan but his perimeter defense and defense>offense is elite. And his intangibles are his best asset - leadership, work ethic, hustle, etc. Not to mention he is the epitome of Mamba mentality - moreso than even Suggs, Green, Cade, etc.
why are we acting like a +3 wingspan is t-rex? he's either 6-5 with a 6-8 wingspan or 6-6 with a nice 6-9 wingspan. He's not Bruno but he's also not Tomball Jimmy who also happens to be a top tier defender despite his limitations physically.
BTW, I'm automatically assuming that we are going to draft Jalen Green. So I am basing all trades and the 2 late first round picks off of that fact.
Are those measurements at age 19 for both individuals? and I just want to include that the league is getting lighter and shorter as the guards inherit the kingdom......making Green the third coming of MJ and the second coming of Kobe. Neither MJ nor Kobe are as quick as Green; nor did they have to be. Both needed to be able to take a pounding in their respective eras; which overlapped. Speed with that leaping ability is the order of the day.....in this NBA-lite era. So there I said it, Green deserves the comps to MJ and Kobe in today's era. Would be off if I needed Green in MJ's or Kobe's era. I would need JG to exceed 200 plus pounds if that was the case.
It's definitely not t-rex. It's normal-ish for a wing. I think he's at 6'7.5". That's totally fine (though Jimmy's is 6-8 I think). The elite wing defenders typically have longer wing spans than that, but agreed that it's not an issue or anything. It does lower the ceiling/floor on his defensive potential vs if he had like a 6-11 wingspan, though. Also, with his frame and stuff I don't see elite defense from him.
He was measured in mid 2018 at 6’4 barefoot with a 6’7.5 wingspan He’s 19.5, that was 3 years ago at 16.5 Entirely plausible that he’s gotten a little taller, and wingspan a little longer since being 16 His wingspan isn’t special but 3.5 inches difference isn’t T-Rex, it’s just okay (for an NBA player). T-Rex label is reserved for wingspans are within an inch or 2 of their height
Marcus Smart has a 6-9 Wingspan Chris Paul has a 6-4 wingspan Patrick Beverly has a 6-7 wingspan Jrue Holiday has a 6-7 Wingspan Oladipo has a 6-9 Wingspan. Those are the most elite guard defenders in the NBA today off the top of my head. Green has the length at 6-8 or 6-9 to be a great defender at the 1 or 2. It's going to take a lot of work and focus to get there.
I’ve been on the Green > Mobley bandwagon and probably still am… … but I’ve been listening to podcasts on a drive and there’s arguments for sure for either one. You’d like Green to be a better defender and more advanced passer and playmaker. Some of the guys not so high on him not that if he can’t be an elite scorer… what role does he really have? You’d like Mobley to be more obviously able to adjust to the speed of the NBA (this is my biggest concern even though no one is mentioning it… there’s a bit of a robotic-ness to his fluidity that reminds you the tiniest bit of a Thabeet type that AD didn’t have), have a better shot, and stronger personal leadership traits. there’s no planet where Mobley is ever you’re number one guy… since his upside is AD and AD can’t be a number one guy. And that’s disappointing. but it’s also disappointing that the #2 guy isn’t a clear great get also Ja Morant. if you combined Green and Suggs it’d be a no brainer. and… to be fair… as clear a #1 guy as Cade is in this draft…. It’s not like he’s without question marks. my biggest fear is they pull a GSW. Had the #2 pick last year and blew it … and sitting there as a fan of another team watching it you were like wtf? You chose Wiseman? Great, he’s tall…. And??? my ideal scenario is still trying to trade Wood plus to a Cleveland for the #3 pick, and rolling out KPJ, Green, Tate, KMJ and Mobley, sucking and getting another top pick next year as Walls contract gets a year further down the road. ultimately I won’t have access to the in person pre draft workouts. I get the injury risk but I think you have to make these dudes work out in 5 on 5 settings with legit NBA talent. But hopefully the workouts are illuminating. most mock drafts, pundits and analysts have Mobley as the solid #2. Still if I had to put money on it I’d think they’re leaning Green. You can never have too many creators, Silas works well with guards, Green fits next to KPJ imo and I suspect they already have a relationship and bond. I’d just really love to get em both!
This sums it all up for me. The draft is always a gamble. But at #2 you're looking for a franchise centerpiece. More likely that Green becomes that than Mobley to me. Wood isn't a centerpiece. AD isn't. Bosh wasn't. Green may not be, but he could be.
I think it comes down to passing for Green for me. He apparently has A level ball handling and obvious scoring ability. If he can be an A plus passer to then he’s there offensively. But an A plus passer doesn’t mean he gets by his man and find the open roller when he defense switches. That should be standard. A plus means he can do that PLUS make the cross court pass to the guy in the corner, hit the oops to he big consistently, etc.
If you are projecting him to primarily guard 1's instead of wings, that's very different. Smart and Dipo outweighed Green by 30-40 pounds coming into the draft. Those guys have different frames.
Ability to switch on defense is a must in modern NBA. A player who can only guard 1 position is next to useless. Green has enough tools, defense is about want to.
I agree completely, but you also aren't putting Chris Paul on Lebron as his primary defensive assignment either.
