"Should I Hang Out With Someone Whose Political Views I Hate?"

"The magazine’s Ethicist columnist on whether it’s hypocritical for a liberal to socialize with an increasingly extreme conservative."

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/22/magazine/conservative-friends.html

    excerpt:

I’m happy to stipulate that your views are enlightened and his benighted. Still, it’s possible that you and this fellow are in one respect allied — that you are both committed, as citizens, to participating together in the governance of this battered republic of ours. Despite the forces that would keep us socially and even geographically isolated from one another, you each have a reason to try to understand the other tribe; to figure out what its members believe and (to the extent that there are arguments involved) why they believe it. Democracy falters not when we disagree about things but when we lose interest in trying to make sense of the other person’s point of view and in trying to persuade that person of the merits of our own.

I sometimes respond to Non Contributing Members but I usually prefer 99ers or Contributing Members

I don't care what Cable News Network they watch .

I do not want to associate with Fake Rockets fans ,they should not exist on this board, ever.

I have no problem hanging out with people with differing political views. Generally, it's not that hard to have differing opinions and understand the other person's point of view (not that you have to agree with it). I also know which friends not to engage in political discussion.

I would have a very hard time hanging out with the die-hard Trump supporters who adamantly believe the vote was stolen and all of his propaganda.

i have no problem hanging out with people with differing political views. im in austin and many of my left-leaning friends think im a conservative. i have a bunch of trumper family and they think im a flaming lib-pig.

i have friends and family who voted for trump but dont act like dicks about it and are not literal cult members. they dont take it personally when i criticize trump...i have no problem with them.

i do have a problem with trump cult members, racists, traitors, liars, insurrectionist-sympathizers, ect. the more hard-core trumpers who go around looking for arguments. the type who start insulting you personally when you criticize the politician they like. i know some of them too and i lost all respect for them and dont want to be around them.

I love discussing differences of opinion.
I don't love arguing about differences of opinion.
I have zero tolerance for people that outright dismiss alternate opinions, accept their own opinions as indisputable fact, and degrade those that don't share their personal values.

I dont agree with this at all.
The title is hang out with someone whose political views you hate not just disagree with.
It depends on the persons tolerance but there arent so many different opinions that I outright hate.
But if someone is a fascist, a nazist, a racist a misogynist etc then how is it possible to hang out with them?

Would you hang out with a pedophile?
for the shake of democracy and society?
    hell no.
Then why should I hang out with someone who elicits hate with their views and/or actions?

I have tolerated the precense of family members coworkers and old friends who have hateful opinions but thats just tolerate to be in their company for a little while not actively hang out with them.

Ive started walking away from convos that get political. Its one thing to discuss issues, its another when teams and politician names start getting dragged into the conversation.

Both of the parties are absolute trash and they are no different from each other.

I have friends who are Trump supporters - while at first it did put strain on our friendship I've learned just to accept their views like I have their other views. I just don't engage when it comes up. I think there are a lot of Trump supporters who just don't know what is actually going on, and perhaps it's willful ignorance - but I still enjoy their company despite their views and value their friendship.

We live in a unique time, where the Republican party has become grossly anti-democratic and even fascist, and we see many turn a blind eye toward it or rationalize it by saying both parties are trash and no different from one another.

both parties are trash. This is proven every single day. To think that one of the parties isn’t complete garbage is foolish.

That's the false equivalency the right makes to justify its vote for the right. "well the other side is trash too so I might as well keep voting for these idiots"

Whatever you want to say about democrats, they aren't trying to rig the election the way republicans are right now.
