No he's not, and people used that exact same argument with Springer, and here we are. No one player in this group is irreplaceable, no player in the league is. When healthy he is certainly the best all around player on this team, but we could lose him and improve other areas to offset his loss. Would it hurt, absolutely, but Correa is not the difference between 95 win Astros and 80 win Astros.
Yes. He is. Springer was never the whole team. He couldn't even get us to the show. He rode Correa. We lose Correa we will not make the playoffs.
Correa missed over half the season in 2019 and we won 107 games. He then sucked in October, and we went to the World series
If Correa continues his great year, Astros will likely offer him a 7 year contract 30-35 mill per season.(Grienke is making 35 mill this season) Get Correa from ages 27-33. Takes him through his prime years. I can't see the Astros offering a 10 year contract. Even at that contract, another team will most likely offer him a 8-10 year deal. I agree with the Astros, as much as I love a healthy Correa. I would not do a 10 year deal. Fernando Tatis signed a 14 year deal that keeps him with San Diego till he is 35. 330 million dollar contract. Francisco Lindor will play for the Mets until age 37. 10 year 341 million dollar extension.
And Correa continues to prove me right. I love it. It's driving you nuts. It's been 7 years now and he still hasn't delivered once for you in the power categories. Although it would be nice to see him break 20 hrs in the contract year. He nearly always finishes in the bottom 3rd in the league in all power statistics. Still, he is the best player on the team. And deserves to be paid for it.
Wouldn't a lockout on Dec 1 due to CBA negotiation difficulties affect this though? Most media people are anticipating a lockout and likely late start to the '22 season. That would likely compress free agency, and who knows how things will be changed in a new CBA.
So in your mind ONE guy is the "whole team"?? Tell me, what's Correa's ERA? Every once in awhile you might want to put the crack pipe down.
Best chance the Astros have to keep Correa is if he goes on the IL for 30 days. Nobody will give him a 10 year deal if he's still unable to do a full 162 game season. Initially I didn't think it was in the Astros best interested to keep Correa, but the emergence of Framber, Urquidy, and Garcia has opened their window to compete for the next few years. I would really like the Astros to make a push to try and retain him, but if they can't use that money to bring in some other elite offensive players. Hopefully James "Poopura" Click can make some good moves this offseason.
Different subject and baseball has proven before that they are, indeed, dumb enough to shut down But damn, with the amount of money at stake now and with both sides having already lost some of that last year, I sure try to think they will work something out without a work stoppage All the talk of baseball being a dying sport may or may not be true…but a work stoppage certainly wouldn’t be in their best interests
Sorry wasn't trying to change the subject. Just wondering how it affects Correa's FA specifically. No team would offer a deal before it is signed. The deadline of Dec 1 already compresses FA and even a brief lockout shrink FA even more. So would that result in lower offers overall because Correa won't have time to wait it out before ST?
Correa isn't taking any short term deals unless he gets hurt again. He will want the mega 10-13 year contract. The Astros have the ability to sign him because of the starting pitching that has developed. Will they? Probably not in my opinion because I think Click will be in Crane's ear not to do it. Correa and Straw have a combined 4.2 WAR right now. The Astros could go sign Starling Marte and Chris Taylor who combined have a 4.2 WAR right now as well, and that is with Marte missing several weeks with cracked ribs. Neither Marte or Taylor will likely command more than a 4 year deal, and combined you can probably get them for somewhere around 30-32 million a year which is what Correa will want by himself but for a decade plus. Which move sounds more like a Ray's move which is where Click came from? Also, Marte and Taylor give Click flexibility. Marte can play all 3 outfield spots so if Leon becomes a stud Marte can shift to left when Brantley's deal is up. Taylor can pretty much play any position except catcher on the field. If Jermey Pena becomes a legit guy at SS Taylor can play anywhere. That's just one example of how the Astros can replace the production lost without handing out a mega contract to Correa. I think the Astros will make him an offer well north of 200 million if he stays healthy and continues to produce. However, it only takes 1 team to blow them out of the water. I don't think it will be the Yankees. The Yankees have some payroll issues. They have barely any money coming off the books next season. The only free agents they have are Kluber and Lucas Luetge which is less than 12 million total. They have potentially 17 guys in arbitration with Judge, Sanchez, Voit, Torres, Urshela, Taillon, Green, Montgomery, Frazier, Cessa, Loaisiga, Peralta, Andujar, German, Wade, Higashioka, and Cortes. Those arbitration raises are going to far surpass the money coming off the books and put them at like 220 million in payroll before they sign one free agent. They also have some small raises to Britton and Severino. I doubt they add another monster contract when they have been one of the last teams to get full capacity attendance going. Plus, the fanbase despises Correa. That's like the Astros signing Joe Kelly. I think the Phillies, Rangers, Angels, Giants, and Mariners are more likely to make him a big offer.
Correa is going to want Lindor money but Lindor's play this year might hurt him more than what Correa can do to help himself. If the Astros do a 10 year contract then I can see them setting it up where it likely ends sooner and if not then it's team friendly on the back end. This type of contract sets Correa up to make even more than Lindor over 10 years if he opts out after year 6 to get himself a new market adjusted contract (assuming he plays up to it). 10 Years, 300 million Year 1: 40m (should be plenty of cap room in 2022) Year 2: 35m Year 3: 35m Year 4: 35m Year 5: 30m Year 6: 30m Player option to opt out Year 7: 25m Year 8: 25m Year 9: 25m If player didn't opt out after year 6 then team option to opt out Year 10: 20m
