There's something special about this live version. It feels like they're inviting a listener to a conversation between Joe and Jaco.

Taj Mahal - The Natch'l Blues

Starting today, I am going to listen to 10 albums or CDs by one artist before moving to the next one. I am going to start with Horace Silver. Others will be Howlin' Wolf, The Isley Brothers, Bob Marley, and Marvin Gaye.

ive been doing a thing for a couple years where ill pick an artist and listen to their whole discography in chronological order. its pretty cool b/c you can hear how a band evolves album-by-album. ive noticed that the all-time great bands have about a 10 year run where they can do no wrong. 4 or 5 albums in a row that are all good-to-great (stones, prince, U2, the cure, van halen). but where ive been pleasantly surprised is when im listening to the albums a great band did after they supposedly passed their prime. stuff i previously dismissed and never gave a fair listen to and i now find myself enjoying. its almost cliched to criticize late-period albums by once great bands, but when i listen in chronological order i feel like i can appreciate the later stuff more. you get the full trajectory of their career. i got a greater respect for sammy hagar and post-DLR VH by doing this!

i started radiohead this week and hadnt listend to pablo honey since the 90's. its funny b/c its all the same players, but sounds nothing at all like what they turned into. its a different band! its got some good songs though.
