I have no idea what that has to do with what I said, this has no bearing on if those guys you want will continue to have good years and it does not account for the fact you don't know if the guys on the astros have great 2nd halfs. You act like the season is over for Scrubbs and Paredes and nobody was thinking this would happen to Paredes where you saying last year was a fluke? I am not the one claiming we had much better options like you so I am not the one who needs to say I had knowledge of who and what was offered. My entire point is that you don't know if those guys will continue to perform and you don't know if Scrubb and Paredes will continue to be disappointments, this season is not even half way yet you are out here making proclamations like the season is in the home stretch. Scrubbs would probably not even be pitched that much if Baez was not hurt as well as others in the pen so do you really know if he was betting on Scrubbs and why would you not have been counting on Paredes?
If Paredes or Scrubb turn it around then great. Maybe you should read the title of this thread. It is "2021 TRADE TARGETS?" It doesn't matter if by September Paredes and Scrubb turn it around. Decisions on trades.. you know, what this thread is about..... need to happen in the next 3-7 weeks. Also, Colin McHugh and his wife were on twitter asking for a guaranteed MLB contract from the Astros in the offseason. He hasn't been great but better than Paredes and Scrubb thus far. So yea, the Astros did have some options, but who knows maybe Paredes will bring his 2.625 WHIP below whatever Mchugh's ends up being by the end of the year. I wouldn't bet on it though
I would not think Miami is in the market for a 4th OF. I would not put much value on Conine or Nova until Conine has something he can throw in zone to get whiffs (rumors of increased velo are now rumors of reduced velo) and Nova shows an ability to distinguish balls and strikes. Ivey, Solomon, Dubin, and maybe Hansen are the guys that I think Astros would try not to deal as they may need them this year whether as relief or emergency starters. I'm not sure any could headline a deal for Marte and $4M. Though, if one of those guys was worth Marte and $4M...I'd prefer the pitcher over the CF (i.e., if Astros miss the playoffs, it will more likely be due to pitcher injuries combined with A's not faltering instead of poor CF play). Though if acquiring a CF, Marte would be one I'm interested in. I just don't know how the Astros would do it.
Straw was just filler and offsetting 200k in salary. Astros don't have a bunch of top 100 guys to anchor any deal. It would have to be more quantity over quality to make a big move without hurting the MLB roster.
Pena getting hurt sucks. What would a deal centered on Hunter Brown* and Korey Lee fetch? * Assuming he won't be ready this year.
I do NOT want Houston to give up Hunter Brown for any rental player. Starling Marte is due about $6m after the deadline. He projects to be worth about 2 wins. Factoring in the premium for deadline trades and the potential value of Miami keeping him and QO’ing, Id peg his surplus value at about $15M. I would imagine Houston’s 2nd tier of prospects/youngsters (Abreu, Paredes, Taylor, Ivey, Solomon, Solis, Santos, Toro, Nova, Lee, J Perez) is worth ~$5M each, so any 3 of those guys should do it. Korey Lee is the guy Id least like to see Houston ship out from that group. I value Hunter Brown, Colin Barber, and Pedro Leon as a level higher and really would not include any of them for any rental player; if any of them is getting traded, it needs to be for a cheap controllable star. Whitley would be an interesting discussion; I’d probably trade him if the other team valued him like a fringe Top 100 guy. Same for Pena. Although I’m assuming both guys are extremely unlikely to be traded.
What in that title had you going in on Click and how he could have gotten better guys? You were the one talking things that happened in the offseason and not 2021 TRADE TARGETS, so you were the one who changed topics and I responded. What does Mchughs whip have to do with Trades in 2021? You never answered my question did you think that Paredes was suspect? And once again this season is 60 games in, I guess you think none of these guys can turn it around or think all of the other guys will continue to have those numbers. Remember Smiley? I mean are you really complaining we did not bring Mchugh back and basing things on his 18 innings pitched? Really?
Word. To answer that question, my guess is that both Brown and Lee are more highly valued by the Astros than by other teams. But for me, I would think that Lee and Brown could be 2/3 of a package that would headline an acquisition of a controllable borderline star player. So if Houston were going to try to acquire someone like Ketel Marte or Bryan Reynolds without giving up one of their young MLB SP (Urquidy, Garcia, Javier), those 2 guys plus some would be a fair package. Something like Brown, Lee, Abreu, and Nova for Reynolds I think would be painful but fair value. Not sure Pirates FO (much less their fans) would see it that way.
Giants took Reynolds 2 spots before we took Ronnie Dawson [insert sad face] I try to do that trade without Lee, personally. I'm very curious to see what he does in CC, hopefully later this year. Nova does need to be ductaped to the first trade package we send out, I'm not really sure why they felt the need to protect him in the first place.
I didn't start the GM talk go look at Post 150.... that started it and it went several pages I didn't like the offseason moves as a whole and neither did several people in here like Nook, raining threes, etc. As of now, the offseason was a failure. IT COULD turn around if Baez actually comes back and performs, Odorizzi gets better, or guys like Paredes step up and prove we didn't need more moves. If you are totally cool with the pen and think no moves are needed... good for you. I don't think we can risk waiting for guys to figure it out. In my opinon, the offseason moves that haven't worked yet set it up so now Click needs to make moves and has a tiny budget to make it happen while staying under the luxury tax. He's the GM that's on him to figure it out. YOU brought up not knowing what options the Astros had in the offseason or if they had other players that wouldn't come here. McHugh was an example proving that wrong. He wanted a deal from the Astros and McHugh and his wife tweeted about it and made it sound like the Astros would only do a minor league deal. So he went to Tampa. He even tweeted about it when the bullpen was in full meltdown mode and getting swept by the Rangers. Said sorry guys, I tried to help. I was countering YOUR point. That is all McHugh has to do with anything. Sadly, he has been average this season and he is still way outperforming a number of our relievers. I thought the Astros absolutely should have brought in someone else with closer experience. I said that several times in the offseason thread. I did not want the Astros relying on Paredes to be the 8th inning guy. I wanted another guy with closer experience to go with Pressly. Then they could battle it out for 8th inning/9th inning. I was hopeful Paredes would be solid and maybe move into the setup/closer role later in the season. So was Paredes suspect to me? No, but I wasn't willing to count on him as a late inning reliever to start the season. Click is responbile for roster construction. Those failures...right or wrong fall on him. This isn't new. Players play bad and GMs/coaches get fired. He obviously doesn't deserve that... but I don't think he extracted maximum value in the offseason and with how little the Astros had to spend that is a problem.
There has been no failure yet, the season is still early for some reason you keep acting like this is a done deal. And then you ignore the injuries. Like I said before we can revisit this after the season ends and after the trade deadline. If it is t*** up I will admit it but for some reason you are hell bent on calling it a failure.
Taking a step back...I just don’t see us adding a star or big name player via trade. Our farm is relatively depleted & obviously the loss of future picks is a painful reality. Plus we already have a ton of elite & above average players locked in or in short order to be locked up soon. Maybe Crane says to hell with it, but barring a likely overpay I just see us trying to lure elite talent by way of cash and not losing top tier prospects. Nothing against Click, but this organization may be better suited to focus on cheaper options at our areas of need, say a Stanek-type arm or low upside but known vet in CF. It’s not the sexy move so many fans want, but doesn’t mean it’s not the right move. I think we’re likely to see an Olivier Perez/Cameron Maybin type move for better or worse. We certainly aren’t in a position to overpay which is what a star may very well require. I’m sure Click won’t deviate from the formulas...but I think it’s more likely to hope internal options pan out, especially since we’re so strong elsewhere.
I think the Marlins would have to be pretty sold on Dawson’s breakout to think that was a fair deal. It’ll be interesting to see if any of the prospects who appear to have taken a big step forward (Dawson, Papierski, Joe Perez, Macuare, Melendez) are moved next month.
