I think it was a toss-up between PHX and NYK, tbh. Who expected the Knicks to go 10 games above .500 and also get HCA? Obviously, picking Thibs now looks terrible since the Knicks flamed out of the first round, but still. The Knicks getting the 4 seed was a lot more unexpected than PHX getting the 2nd seed.
I don't think it looks terrible at all. These are regular season awards. Monty and Thibs both had a strong case which is why it was a close race. This isn't like Harden losing the MVP to Russell Westbrook because of 2 extra rebounds on Russ's stat sheet.
I thought "coach of the year" was a curse award. Whoever got it would likely be fired the next season.
Yeah, because they often give it to the coach of a fluke team that overachieves, then they fire him the following year when the team regresses to it’s true form. I could see something like this happening to the Knicks next year. They got the double curse: Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year!
It's funny COY is always given to the coach of a surprisingly overachieving team. Nobody stop to think that the overachievement might be just a fluke that has nothing to do with the coach. These teams often get exposed once the playoffs starts. The Knick's improvement is largely because of Randle's surprising performance. But he disappeared in the playoffs. The Suns look more legit and coaching might have something to do with it.
Oh, I meant moreso the timing of giving out this award. I definitely agree with Thibs over Williams, considering Thibs did more with less and everyone had a low expectation for the Knicks. But giving out the award right now to a coach who just lost a first round series, vs a coach who just took out the defending champs and LeBron, is lolzy.
