Agreed as well as hopefully treat the underlying issues as much as possible.

Nah I'm not buying it. Allen Iverson is the most gangsta person in sports and the least likely person to do media and guess what? He still did them. It's part of being a professional athlete, you don't want to do media, find another profession.

That's the thing they don't. But they still do it cause it's kind of their job? Also they get paid like millions of dollars to play sports.

Thank you for the love of god. This whole woke nonsense needs to stop. She gets paid to hit a freaking tennis ball. If Allen freaking Iverson can do them and he talks like an 8th grader then no excuses for Naomi.

What qualifications do you have to diagnose her mental health? People don't sweat players who pull a hamstring for not playing. Why should people sweat her for having mental health issues. She would get millions of dollars if she played as well as she is capable. So she is putting her money where her mouth is.

It is absurd for folks that have no idea of her history or mental health issues to tell her what is healthy for her to do.

They don't do them when health reasons keep them out of games.

Of all the things people love to debate, I don't get this one. It seems like stirring up a controversy where none exists.

An employee didn't do part of their job and they got fined, and then the employee said they're having a tough time and decided to take some time away from the job. (shrug).

Does America not realize that this kind of thing happens a lot? Different employers handle it slightly different ways, but whatevs. I'm so sick (but not quite mad) of how mad Americans get about everything. Drink less covfefe or something.

That's the thing I don't know her mental illness or the fact that I don't even watch tennis. But I do know some regular folks with mental illness and it's usually cause of hard times. So I don't know.

Right. I hope anyone with mental health issues gets them treated. Sometimes particularly in athletics health issues cause players to miss games or playoffs, or tournaments.

It shouldn't matter whether or not the health issues are mental or physical, as long as the players work on treating their health issues and working to stay healthy.

But if health issues of any kind can keep a person out of a game, then so be it. This is worse than some other cases because she won't get paid if she doesn't compete. (Of course she'll still make sponsor money, but not the tournament money.) She's missing out on money. She's a champion and one of the best in the world. It is reasonable to believe she would have been making more money had she continued the tournament.

People who don't play basketball or football can still need knee replacements. I think it's similar with mental health. Having a really tough situation can make you more prone to depression or whatever else, but it's a disease and can hit anybody. That's how I think about it at least.

Her “mental health issues” are apparently social anxiety and bouts of depression since 2018. That’s not exactly schizophrenia or major depressive disorder with suicidal ideations.

If she had just come out and said “I have social anxiety and it’s difficult for me to speak about my struggles on clay court therefore I will not be doing any press conferences during the French Open” most reasonable people would have understood and this whole thing would have been a non story.

She just needs to change her approach to press conferences.

Well, depression could be suicidal. I don't know any details. She said she was going to opt out of the press conferences almost exactly like you mentioned. She was even willing to pay the fines for doing that. The tournament talked about further punishment so she opted to withdraw in favor of her mental health. It was the tournament that heightened the situation rather than let it fade.
