My Alaska buddies have seen them so thick that they'll suffocate a youngish moose, they clog up the nostrils and then the animal gets weak and...predators and scavengers gotta eat too.

Nice song, I'll check that guy out.

You're not talking about mosquitos, right?

Yes. I am talking about mosquitos. I never heard of it until last night so I dug out a big can of coffee grounds I had in the pantry for a while, didn’t like it to much. So I just hang spread it out from the edge of my patio to 50 or feet out. Haven’t seen a mosquito yet today. Sounds crazy but it works. You can burn it like incense too apparently

    That is indeed interesting...

It does drive bugs away (coffee grounds are great in your garden for that and compost purposes)...but you'll need a metric f***ton of coffee grounds to do a yard.

...but coffee grounds on the ground will absolutely not keep mosquitos from breeding, since they lay their eggs in, and their larvae grow in, standing water.

I have no idea if this site is legit or not, but that’s where I read it.

Went camping at Interstate State Park about 90 min north of MPLS a few summers ago. I can attest that they are really REALLY bad. You need the industrial strength DEET. Can't do the organic stuff. Worse was during a rain storm. Wife and kids were loaded in my already running truck while I packed up. The heat created by the truck attracted them to the extent that it was a complete wall of mosquitos surrounding my vehicle. I couldn't get it without getting destroyed and allowing hundreds or thousands in on my kids. Never seen anything like it.

Not much different in the mountains outside of Seattle. Camping there required gallons of spray.

Yep. Spent a week one summer in Prudhoe Bay on the ANS and the next week near the Kenai in Southern Alaska visiting well sites and I have never seen anything like it. It was absolutely insane.

We moved to a new house in a different part of Houston in August 2019 and I thought I hit the lottery as I normally get destroyed outside here (they love me) and I have spent hours upon hours in my backyard and have never been bit. That changed this week.

Alaska mosquitos are legit. Having your dong attached while taking a leak ain’t no joke.

Just remember: mosquitoes are historically nature's best population control

I remember the mosquito truck when I was a kid

Every kid ran at full speed into the closest house, didn't matter what we were doing: Game Off!

My six year old keeps asking me, "Dad, we want all of the mosquitos to be extinct right?"

    "Yes son, that's right."

I don't remember mosquitos ever being this bad. I can't water my plants without looking down and seeing five mosquitoes circling my legs. This week's rainy forecast won't help.

I just ordered a mosquito trap off of Amazon.
    .

Will report back on how well it works.

Aside from just spraying yourself down with repellent, what other things do you guys use just for hanging out in the backyard and avoiding mosquitos?

Run faster than the next guy.

In my case, it's a 3yo. Works every time.

I have had a Dynatrap for about a year. it just may be psychological, since paying the money and seeing a bunch of dried bugs in the bottom , but it did seem to work last year and we did seem to have few flying critters including mosquitos. I recently replaced the bulb in mine. My wife's stepdad bought a newer one with what seems like a stronger fan.
