That kid they were grooming to be the next mummy guy, Luke Ford, he's had a pretty good run. Thought he was decent in the mummy, thinking that movie did him in, but he's been making a lot of good movies.
I think so. He was a bankable star in his time. The Mummy & sequel George of the Jungle Journey to the Center of the Earth Actually, looking at his action resume, it's pretty sparse compared to 80's icons, but he had some good roles.
None of those will put butts in the seats on opening weekend. Put them in movies outside of Marvel CU. There are no Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Sly Stallone, Arnold, Willis, Eastwood, Pitt, Clooney, etc...anymore.
Good point. Moviegoers are more sophisticated and fickle these days. They look at a combination of director, story, scriptwriter, star, etc. I would say The Rock is probably the most bankable action star right now. Bautista is climbing the charts and I would look twice at a movie that Henry Cavil is in. For some reason Marky Mark still gets top billing, but I don't consider him a draw.
I brought up Charlize because I know most don't think of her that way. I don't. I really don't think female when I hear action star either. Ronda Rousey seemed like one who could pull it off, for a short while at least. Others... I don't know. You're right about ATJ being the "it" girl. Seems she has a movie coming out every other month now. I'll always remember her from her M Night Shyamalan movies & The Witch. And she did an X-Men, I guess... not sure how that went. My thinking is, you almost have to do a big actiony/franchise movie every few years if you want to stay relevant and I expect she'll want to.
ultimately, think this just underscores that the industry has moved from people going to see actors to an industry of characters and worlds that have what amounts to an eternal appeal. And I have no problem with that.
I'm a little scared to watch Doom Patrol after that clip, but for some reason, that scene has me strangely intrigued to find out what the hell that is. Cannot put my finger on it. There's a weird quality in there worth checking into. Maybe it's the girl. I don't know. I'm gonna watch it.
the peak of bad ass action stars and movies was in the 90's. Hollywood needs to get find more Arnolds and Stallones.
bumping up @Xerobull 's thread in light of the recent news re: Willis. 1. Do we even HAVE action stars anymore, given the amount of movies that have came out that's comic book related? 2. Hell, is the action movie even an important genre anymore? I think Hollywood made a half-hearted attempt with Tom Holland's Uncharted movie but....I don't know if we'll ever see the Golden Era of action movies in the 80s-90s again.
I had no idea Jason Momoa was 42 and could not figure out why he was not mentioned. 40 is the new 20 anyway right?
