I can't believe we have a group of people that agree on the issue yet they are arguing about semantics. This is what really ****s up the messaging, when two sides of the same group can't get on the same page. Anyways, carry on.
I don't inherently believe Americans are as helpless as you do. That's the key issue. I would rather the government be providing basic healthcare, basic services, etc than relying on private industries. What Nike does is why I favor stronger global set of minimum rules. I like the Biden admin is at least talking about a global corporate tax.
I consider myself progressive, and I generally agree that people aren't inherently helpless. But there are people who are working minimum wage jobs to support their family while training, going to school, or whatever reasons. If they call in sick, that's a day without pay. They don't get vacation. They don't really have the same freedom of taking days off. I also agree there is a difference between that and slavery.
I disagree. It reminds me of the whole "defund the police" BS that we were hearing last year. It's a huge turnoff to individuals. I saw my friends and others being confused by the wording and didn't even know if they agreed or disagreed with it. Once you read more about it, it made sense what those that came up with the term meant by it. Of course, conservative media ate this **** up and feasted on the ignorance of half our population. Here we have a similar scenario, calling something "slave wages", which simply implies that minimum wage does not give you the bare minimum to be able to afford the bills, have a mortgage, be able to save money, etc etc. Once again, conservative media will eat this **** up and poison the ignorant. As someone who votes democrat, I would just like my party to get on the same page rather than be split on the issue. I know progressives hate Joe Manchin and company, I know centrists dislike Bernie Sanders and company, but ultimate, it is one party, that really should continue to compromise, rather than have this mentality of "my way or the highway", then we lose mid-terms and we will be in gridlock again.
That's a good way to put it and it was the reason I pushed back on the M4A narrative either you had insurance or you were gonna be destitute because you did not and the only way to solve it was M4A.
I'm lower, upper middle class in Austin.... I had to grind harder when I was in college and having to work. I didn't have much vacation/time off before 25 and I've been lifeguarding since age 15. I think government should be working to make healthcare cheaper and more inclusive, higher education cheaper, childcare cheaper, etc, but you aren't going to convince someone just starting off won't have to grind or work hard hours. Having seen generational poverty within my family, having kids too soon, becoming a felon, or not finishing high school are sure paths to keep yourself poor. While I want to make birth control more accessible, child rearing easier, drug use a public health issue, etc, people are still responsible for their mistakes.
I don't think a lot of centrist dislike Bernie I know I don't I appreciate how he changed the narrative for the democratic party and emboldened them. Now as for hating Joe Manchin yeah they do and anything considered moderate for the most part.
Tons of them - the USA is broken, Greed has made this country make terrible decisions for the people - Unions may be the only answer. DD
Sure, I feel like the people who need to use "defund the police" and " slave wages" are further extreme on the political spectrum and just aren't helpful to winning elections. "Defund the police" cost the Dem a bigger majority in 2020 so I'm wary of allowing these same progressives to under-perform in 2022. I'm an evil moderate Dem, but "slave wages" seems insulting to me. I agree.
Stop trying to get republicans on board, screw em - kill the fillibuster and do what is right, History and the public will be fine as things work out for the better....it will further expose the GOP and their GREED over PEOPLE (GOP) ways. DD
You framing that I believe people are helpless because I believe that if you work full time regardless of how menial the task is you deserve to be able to afford rent, utilities, healthcare, food and savings for emergency funds like auto repairs shows the disconnect and strawmanning from you. I'm not advocating for people with basic menial jobs to be able to afford a brand new car or a PS5. We are speaking of basic necessities where they don't have to worry about eviction month to month because one month they got sick and couldn't 2ork the same hours as the previous month making them short on rent where they couldn't save any emergency funds to help them pay said rent for the month. Thar desire doesn't mean people are helpless. It means people are willing to work and "grind it out" but aren't being compensated enough for "grinding it out'. And you aren't going to solve generational poverty if you believe that people should "grind it out" for basic living expenses because that means grinding it out while not being able to afford time home to raise children. It means grinding it out and still not being able to afford high quality early childhood education services and daycare. It means not having access to mental health resources for their kids. All of which increases probalistic odds that these children will not develop to their maximum potential and increase their probabalistic odds of having mental health issues as adults and increased probalistic odds that they will pass on their generational poverty to their children.
I am virulently anti GOP, but you still have to use Congress. Dems don't have the votes do what they want because of their razor thin majority and "blue dogs".
Schroedinger's Bernie. He's ineffective and his messaging never works yet his scheming ways has shifted the Democrat party towards him and his policies/rheotoric.
So you just continually ignore the parts where I advocate for better childcare, less expensive healthcare, less expensive higher education, etc... It's like you can't comprehend words when it's someone who doesn't believe as you believe.
And you ignore the part where you put words in my mouth saying that I believe Americans are helpless because I believe people who work full time even for the most menial jobs should be able to afford basic essentials.
Because that's the crux of it..... you don't use "slave wages" and not think Americans aren't helpless. Your rhetoric of think tanks and media also paints a helpless picture... Meanwhile, I get accused of right wing tactics because I dare push back.....
This is some disengenous bs. You claimed that I believe Americans as individuals are helpless in the sense of working and being employed. And you make accusations that I think Americans are helpless rather than actually claiming why you think media outlets from activists have the same influence and pull on society and more importantly our lawmakers as media outlets and think tanks owned by hedge funds and the most powerful conglomerates in the world like ATT and Disney who have the mechanisms to "convince" law makers with the revolving door, insider trading and campaign donations. It's like beating up a strawman that someone thinks Americans are helpless because the small ma and pa store can't compete with Amazon or Walmart. Do you think Americans are helpless because I bet my left nut you believe the notion that small ma and pa store can't compete with Walmart? So me saying that movements funded by grassroots and the common person have less influence than institutional and corporate influence that actually has the mechanisms in place to influence polticians is not me believing Americans are helpless unless you can acknowledge some self awareness and agree in principle that Americans are helpless because you believe small business stores can't compete with Amazon or Walmart.
You said you don't like the influence he has on moderates and in instances before you say his messaging is ineffective.
