Maybe, perhaps, but..... Question is, what was Pressly's GP prior to that 2-inning performance? He hadn't pitched in 4 days before his 0.1 yesterday Eta- Did some research and Pressly had 4 days rest his last 2-inning appearance. Plus he pitched yesterday too. Seems he really wasn't available tonight for multi. We should've pitched around Garcia and taken our chances.
Pressly has pitched 18 innings - a good amount but not in the top 50 in reliever usage. I know it’s important to keep him healthy but Javier and Garcia will be in the pen in a few weeks so there will soon be less need to deploy him in higher leverage situations.
In 2018, the Astros had in the bullpen: Colin McHugh Will Harris A good Joe Smith Tony Sipp and his 1.86 ERA Josh James Ryan Pressly Roberto Osuna I didn't even bring up Brad Peacock, whom was solid. In 2019, the Astros had in the bullpen: Probably the best 7-8-9 combo in baseball with Harris, Pressly, and Osuna Not to mention a good Joe Smith and Josh James In 2021, the Astros have Ryan Pressly... and THAT'S ALL! Stanek, Raley and Abreu look good in spurts, then trash in others. We were relying alot on Paredes, whom is either injured or sucking. We were relying on Baez, whom just can't get healthy. Sure, Dusty could have run out Pressly for the 10th... and that's actually what I personally wanted. But at the same time, he's right, he can't keep running Pressly out there. We NEED dependable bullpen pieces, plural, as in MORE than one.
The best argument (against Dusty) I've heard tonight is... why Pressly in the 9th? To win this game, we need reliever(s) to pitch two innings. So Dusty should already have a plan in mind for those two innings. If he already had a plan, his plan was Pressly in the 9th and Abreu in the 10th (obviously he had no plans to do Pressly for 2 innings). The BIG problem there is Pressly went up against the bottom of the order and Abreu faced the meat of their order. Don't you want your best pitcher against their best hitters?
I constantly see managers run their closers out in the 9th inning of tied games, and it's always wth? I didn't realize that guy was the "keep-the-game-tied-er"; I thought he was the freaking CLOSER. Which we didn't have, with the freaking lead, against the meat of their order, because Dusty ran him out there in the 9th to shut down scrubs. W. T. H.
Went to bed down 3-1. Up at 3AM and the Astros lost. No surprise. Neither is finding out the Astros rallied or that Dusty blew it. I miss both Luhnow and Hinch.
Bryan Abreu blows another. I get that Dusty doesn't have a ton of options right now, but this kid is not a good pitcher.
Lmfao, no matter what Dusty does it was his fault. Its absurd. Abreu loses in the 8th. Should have gone to Pressly early. Abreu loses it in the 9th. Why not Pressly. Abreu loses it in the 10th, why not hold Pressly to the 10th. I'm fine playing the long game. Burning out our one good reliever is stupid. Somebody else has to not suck, and that will be on Click to figure out.
Ya let the starters come back in Framber and Urquidy which allows guys like Javier who can throw his stuff without worrying about lasting 6 innings to the pen.
Yes...blame Dusty because Click didn't add enough bullpen help in the offseason. Stanek was pitching way above his head the first month and has now come back to reality. Guess what? His current 4.00 ERA this season matches his career ERA. That's who he is. Baez hasn't thrown a pitch and is taking over 5 million home. We are still paying Pruitt to rehab forever..... Raley at 2 million also stinks right now. Lots of bullpen arms went for cheap this offseason. Click decided to gamble on Scrubb, Smith, Paredes, and Taylor. Massive fail thus far.
I don't like that Dusty wasted Pressly on the bottom of the order in the 9th instead of saving him for the top of the order in the 10th. That being said, they were one out away from winning that game. What frustrates me more is that Abreu seemed to pitch around Gallo (.211 hitter) to attack Garcia (.291 hitter) instead. I know Gallo is a lefty, but logically that made no sense to me. If he goes after Gallo, we're probably talking about how Abreu stepped up big last night and maybe the bullpen isn't as bad as we though. Instead...
Pressly had ONE OUT in the previous SIX DAYS. A four out outing is NOT overworking your closer. Dusty was NOT in a no-win situation. He just made a series of stupid decisions. 1. Pulling Emanuel 2 outs in SIX DAYS 2. Pulling Smith 2 outs in SEVEN DAYS 3. Pulling Bielak 1 inning in SIX DAYS 4. Pulling Raley 1 inning in FOUR DAYS 5. Pulling Pressly 1 out in SIX DAYS Every reliever he pulled except Stanek was well rested. And he pulled a well rested Pressly for an overworked Abreu.
The two big pitching moves added this offseason have been complete failures so far. They do have time to turn it around. Odorizzi,Baez. Abreu, Paredes dont need to be pitching in high leverage situations. Bad control Give me Emanuel in these situations. Better control
