When you explained why Porter gets less attention than AOC, your reasons listed were "T&A" and "Cult of Personality." This implies that AOC's renown is due to her female assets and blind fanboys/girls, and yes, it is rather denigrating. If this was not your intent, I believe you but there was probably a better way to frame your response. Let's not forget that AOC rocketed to fame by beating the long-seated, better-funded and party favorite (he was in line to succeed Pelosi) Joseph Crowley in the primary in 2018. Unlike many upstarts, she wasn't (at the time) the beneficiary of a rich or well-connected family, a national profile that bolstered her fundraising, or even an anti-incumbent wave. This was a big story - maybe the biggest of the Democrat wave in 2018 - and it's only natural that AOC would become widely famous as a result. Since then, she has remained one of the most social-media-savvy Congresspersons, which has been both a blessing and a curse. She can effectively communicate to a wide audience at any time, but as a result, she's become the target of a lot of right-wing and even moderate hatred. Even Pelosi has thrown jabs at her - perhaps because AOC beat her boy but also because AOC represents change (broadly and detail-wise) that I'm sure Pelosi isn't thrilled to accept. In any case, Porter is also amazing - I would love to see both women rise to leadership roles in Congress
She is renown for that it's just facts. This does not mean she does not have a lot more going on than that but let's call a spade a spade her renown is mostly because of her looks and who she beat and because she knows how to run a twitter account. No there was not a better way to say it, I said what I said if you want to have issues with it that's on you. I am a fan of AOC but it is what it is.
A few possibilities - She is in fact a star among Democrats. But she doesn't attract the attacks from the Right, and from Trump (AFAIK) and thus doesn't get the attention of the media as much. - Aoc and Squad, and this apply more to the Squad, get much more attention due to the attacks levied on them from Trump. That kind of make them popular (*star*) due to media attention. But among democrats, they probably aren't as much a star as Porter even with the media attention.
I don't think she is a star among Democrats, nobody talks about her and she is never bought up or put on cable news. Now that might be a choice but you seldom get twitter mentions or soundbites from her. I do agree that her not getting incoming from Republicans tamps down the attention. I just want people like her to be talked about as much as The Squad leading up to 2022.
She's new and growing in popularity. She had some strong online media attention. Winning in a conservative district while being a version of Warren is not an easy thing to do and she's doing it with strong individual donors support. I recall in an exchange with CDC director Redfield, Redfield relented and basically said yes to free testing to all and said she's very smart. That exchange might be in this tweet. It got 28.3M views.
That's the one. It was a masterful performance. I love Katie Porter. I wish all politicians cared as much as she does.
Agreed, I meant they are both similarly able to make a digestable point and are internet friendly to do it in a concise manner that gets the point across.
I know people will get mad but I don't think she is good at making a digestable point or does not do it enough IMO. That's what impresses me about Porter, she is not rah rah at all. I think you need both to succeed as a party.
I totally agree. The quote I gave of AOC was one of them where I thought she nailed it. These terribly themed distracting names like Defund, blm almost take away the conversation from the actual issues, aoc often plays fodder to the 'twitterization' of policies. but that was one where she said tax the rich doesnt mean me and you become millionaires through hardwork and lose fity to the Govt. we're talking about betsy devos, koch, sorros or whichever ass hole things he can just buy up policies and reps over democracy, not pay taxes, and then reap susbidies too(they can and do, but f them) So yea, in someways she seems to have been caught up in the 'celebrity' and going viral, and some cases she nails it and makes strong points. You are right about Porter. I wish we had more of her and you are doing a great thing by continuing to spread this stuff as will I. When someone sees this, doesn't matter the political spectrum you have to nod along. She makes her case, illustrates it clearly, and the a hole phram guy who is briilliant enough to make 100s of millions can't even respond. Stacey Abrams likewise was very humble, didn't try to go make herself a hero and take credit, but was strong on actual content and depth. They blow anyone else's bs Hyperbole for the news clips out of the water in my opinion in a debate. Imagine a debate that was in debt i nactual policy, long form, rather than the made for TV WWE silly debates we have now.
I won’t give them credit. That’s like saying You can beat your wife with a switch or device the size(width) of your thumb. Even though it was legal does not make it moral or right. So saying hey it’s system does not make them look any better it actually makes them worse.
I don't disagree. If you dig into any major, money-making, large-market business sector in the US, I would suggest you're going to find this. Pharma deserves the criticism. I would just add that beating up a couple of companies or even a dozen for this standard practice makes me think of those who want to cure racism by just publicly flogging a few obvious racists. I mean, it's not useless, and it may help discourage the most obvious bad behavior, but you might not be approaching the roots of the issue. Cheers.
Furthermore, the domino that fell with aoc carried on in new york with Bowman. Beating Engel who was also a decades old incumbent, went and got official backing from pelosi, hilary, the whose who of the dnc. At some point, both the current incumbent republicans and dems have to realize their lower popularity rates for years but utilizing funding, gerrymandering to stay in power has no led to an opening for anyone who is not traditional in both a good or bad way. The former ran on that they know how Washington Works, the latter ran on that doesn't matter because Washington hasn't efficiently worked for the people in a while
McKinsey Chief Says Firm Failed to Identify Opioid Epidemic; the international consulting firm has agreed to pay $641 million to settle claims by U.S. states that it helped fuel the country’s opioid epidemic by providing sales analysis and marketing advice to makers of the highly addictive painkillers, including Purdue and Johnson & Johnson Katie Porter was blunt and direct w her questions, exposing that McKinsey was working concurrently---assigning the same consultants--- for the FDA (regulation implementation), as well as big pharma such as Purdue Phama (aggresseive sales/marketing schemes to game the legalized opioid market). She asked the CEO why McKinsey didn’t disclose to the FDA its concurrent work for the drug regulator and for Purdue, which often involved the same consultants, was a conflict of interest. “Who made you conflict of interest czar for the U.S. government?” she said
Rep Katie Porter has uncovered this quid-pro-quo / bribery committed by the then Deputy Secretary of Interior when Orange Hair was POTUS For the first time in history, the House Natural Resources Committee made a criminal referral with the Justice Department. That’s after a three-year investigation by Democrats revealing evidence of possible donations to the Trump campaign in exchange for federal government approval of Arizona real estate deals. Calling this “egregious,”, Rep. Katie Porter says this shows the importance of Congress “re-establishing the rule of law and the expectation that administration officials are going to follow it.”
during the 15 rounds of voting on House Speaker last week— a process that had lasted more than four days---- Katie porter was reading a book killing time,
I wish she was my representative. She's doing an amazing job representing her constituents. I'm happy she's running for the Senate.
