A 25 year old who has yet to prove anything is better than an MIT graduate who has proven himself and is definitely sought out? If patrick Fertitta went out job hunting right now and applied for a CEO position there would be a door slammed at his face everytime. Things are earned not deserved. Patrick has not earned a CEO position. He is definitely not a Jeanie Buss. Even Jim Buss had to work his way in the Lakers organization. This is just plain stupidity!

"The Warriors spent $49.63 million in penalties over the last five seasons, while even the small-market Thunder spent $33.73 million. There was no excuse for Houston to not open up the checkbook. This is a franchise located in the fourth-biggest metro area in the U.S. that has had a superstar in the prime of his career. Alexander sat on his hands while Houston’s rivals went all in, counting on Morey’s ability to use advanced statistics to turn water into wine."

"This refusal to spend money became farcical once Alexander sold the team to Tilman Fertitta in 2017. Fertitta spent so much money ($2.2 billion) to purchase the Rockets that he may not have had the liquidity to go into the red to build a title contender. Houston was a laughingstock around the league for the amount of juggling it had to do to stay under the tax. The best example came at the trade deadline last season, when Morey used a future first-round pick to shed the salaries of Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss. There was no basketball reason for the move. It was just done to cut costs. It’s not that Knight and Chriss would have helped the Rockets. But there were certainly a lot of better things that Morey could have used that pick for."

"Houston also spent that season in a bizarre staring contest with Danuel House Jr. House is the kind of diamond in the rough that Morey routinely uncovered in Houston, an undrafted free agent on a two-way contract who would become a starting-caliber wing. The problem was that players on those deals can spend only 45 days with the NBA team during the season before their contracts have to be converted. Money in Houston was so tight that Morey had to send House back to the G League when he wouldn’t sign a below-market long-term deal. He replaced House with two players he signed off the street (Gerald Green and Kenneth Faried) before bringing him back right before the playoffs. It’s not like House was asking for the world. He signed a three-year, $11 million contract in the offseason. But even that was more than Morey could offer at the time."

"Houston’s limited financial flexibility became an even bigger issue last season after the trade for Westbrook. With the team’s two best players costing a combined $76.7 million, it became almost impossible for Morey to fill out the roster while staying under the luxury tax. Morey and head coach Mike D’Antoni had to conjure up production from players other teams didn’t want. Jeff Green went from being cut by the Jazz to being a crucial piece of the Rockets’ small-ball attack in the playoffs. It was the same story with Austin Rivers, who had been on three teams in five seasons before landing in Houston, and Ben McLemore, who had one foot out of the NBA before the Rockets turned him into a 3-point sniper. All were more valuable in Houston than anywhere else in the league because Morey identified what they could do well and put them in roles that didn’t ask them to do much else.

It’s unclear why he stepped down when he did."

Would anyone here care to name 5 things Tilman has done to improve the Rockets performance since taking over?

    Unfair? OK, 3.

    .... 1?

Yeah I'm sure his 25 year old golden spoon kid will win the hearts of the city. Maybe someday he can even become as good of a leader as Cal McNair!

There needs to be an outright and complete boycott of all associated businesses of this family.

I don't really think it's not about Patrick at all. I have no doubt he's a nice smart guy by all accounts.

It's about how Tilman has conducted his business with the Rockets since he bought the team leading to one of the best front offices all leaving and us ending up with his 25 year old son at the helm

Sure. Tilman doesn't get the benefit of our doubt because of his track records. If it wasn't that, I'd at least entertain the unlikely possibility that maybe Patrick is indeed a brilliant guy and is actually quite reasonable to get the job. I mean, when Les hired Morey, a lot of people was skeptical that a stats guy with zero basketball experience could be successful at a job of building a basketball team.

Any goodwill I could have towards Patrick has gone when I found out he was a big supporter of the Westbrook trade.

I agree, he may very well be good. but morey was a guy who suceeded in many parts, was already a successful businessman, and MIT business graduate, he already had elite output in a few places. Impressive for Les to give him a chance and more impressive for Morey to evolve and change the game.

Likewise with Stan's son in Denver. He worked for them for years as an employee, only took over after his dad had to hand over the team due to his other sports teams. EVen with that, he played 4 years of D1 basketball, he could've coasted his whole life. He actually played meaningful games, became a team captain.

All these guys showed signs of leadership. Does that mean This kid will be bad? no not at all. I'm dismayed, borderline offended, by the ownership performance and lying the last 3 years, yet I still retain hope for the future. I still like our young piece and silas and stone can keep building on that and so long as Pat listens and lets them grow, learns from the last 3 years, surrounds himself with top talent and builds on the culture, rockets can still see special days a few years ago, accelerated by getting the top 4 this year.

But its just tough to swallow, most of it or maybe all of it directed towards tilman, I can't blame a kid for that. But this is a serious big boys league, telling morey and tehse guys to answer and run ideas by a 25 year old, let alone let him shadow you to eventually take your job is not going to draw us top level talent or staff, and let alone we are coming off the heels of losing our CEO, GM, AS GMs, Coach, Associate head coach, stars, vets, or anyone whose been around in this league high tailed form the rockets and many leaving an unprecedented amount of money. I can't point anywhere in nba history that has happened, that was a Tilman' fertitta Culture Special. Now we all pray for losses and hope this season ends as fast as possible, doesn't give us our time and energy spent on it, fans get very very little material back, its almost all emotional. The blame and negativity is fair game, my personal take is once lottery day happens. I take a step towards moving on, until then while I see my team clowned on daily, play to lose, screw Tilman.

Being a nice guy doesn't mean the most qualified. Unless it's a start up or something, most established organizations; like fortune 500 companies, just don't have a 25 yr old CEOs. Rockets was last a 2.2b franchise. It's kind of laughable, that behind the scene these things are being floated. When you want someone to steer a ship, experience is a thing. You don't see NBA teams hire 25 yr old head coaches. Stephan Silas is considered a young coach and he's 47. Brad Stevens and Ty Lue are 44.

Don't have Patrick's resume, but did he get a MBA at least, or Sports management degree of some sort? Not trying to do reverse ageism, is he a savant that we don't know about?

It shouldn't be a surprise, that some of us balk at this kind of nepotism. The optics just doesn't look good. If the Fertittas are situationally aware, then it should be apparent to them. Maybe they don't care.

Also keep in mind, the Rockets CEO is different than most teams. We essentially own Toyota Center (wrt revenue and operations). So, the Rockets have like 20 more permanent ees in our media guide devoted to stadium and event/concert operations. They report to the CEO. Also, we have the league’s biggest China office and business. Tad Brown was in China a lot.

not sure what cfnet thinks the Rockets CEO does, or if we just fear that it will mean he’ll have power to advise owner on bball things, which is an odd fear, because Patitta already does that.

Whoever it is, the Rockets CEO has a significantly more expansive job than most, because there’s a big chunk of the business that is not bball-operations related ... yet none of that really requires a wall street ceo.

hell, i could see it causing him to miss a lot more bball meetings than he is now.

I think you are selling Morey way short, it's a bit unfair. He was an MIT grad and was an executive for EY. He was specifically first hired by the Celtics front office due his experience with stats. and with that experience Les hired him.

We really don't know anything about Patrick, and the only reason he is hired at 25, 3 years fresh out of college with no work experience is because family connections. We are not talking about a intern position, or even like a AVP position. We talking about the CEO of a billion dollar NBA franchise.

Good point, 25 year old Patrick should be able to navigate the sociopolitical climate of China with great aplomb, how did we miss that point. (Snicker)

Cyber has said this I believe. Ryan Rusillo(this one isn’t as credible at all) also said he heard this on his pod cast.

If Tilman is leveraging NBA/Rockets’ relations to expand GN or Landry’s , I’m sure a GN/Landry’s exec will be there with “Prince Patitta”, when the King himself cant go.

what’s your fear wrt the CEO managing China revenue.

I am imagining him not actually doing anything then. He's literally a figurehead monarch and decisions are made by other people
