A Black man enslaved by his white boss for 5 years should be given $546,000 in compensation, a court In 2019, Bobby Paul Edwards, who owned the J&J Cafeteria in Conway, South Carolina, pleaded guilty to one count of forced labor for "coercing an African-American man with an intellectual disability to work extensive hours at a restaurant for no pay," and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Justice Department said in a press release at the time. As part of the settlement, Edwards was also ordered to pay John Christopher Smith $273,000 in unpaid wages and overtime compensation. Edwards forced Smith to work over 100 hours a week without pay. He would also beat him with a belt, fists, and pots and pans, the press release said. https://news.yahoo.com/black-man-enslaved-white-boss-045416111.html?.tsrc=daily_mail&uh_test=2_04
People are scum and scum is everywhere. This story reminded me of this documentary I saw a while ago about the same thing in Korea.
anybody thats been to south carolina knows how strong the racism there is. Places like charleston are the least racist, which says a lot.
When I don't want to continue a text conversation, I put a period at the end of every message. When someone responds with a period at the end of their message, I also assume they don't want to continue the conversation. I get confused with the dot, dot, dots. Do they have something else to say? Do they want me to think about what they've said? Are they thinking? Are they waiting for me to respond?
Smith worked 18 hours a day, six days a week and was forced to live in a “cockroach-infested” apartment behind the business. Edwards’ family knew Smith was being enslaved and did nothing to try and stop it. Whenever Smith’s family came looking for him, Edwards would lock Smith in the kitchen freezer or in another room so that his family couldn’t find him. Once, when Smith tried to escape he was caught and “hit in the head with a frying pan, burned with hot tongs, beaten with belt-buckles and called the n-word repeatedly.” Edwards was finally caught, and in 2019 he pleaded guilty to one count of forced labor “coercing an African-American man with an intellectual disability to work extensive hours at a restaurant for no pay,” and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Justice Department said in a press release at the time, Insider reports. As a part of the initial settlement, Smith was awarded $273,000 in unpaid wages and overtime compensation. Well, the Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit doubled that amount, which would be $546,000. Insider notes “that the court said the district court did not properly account for federal labor laws when it made the decision on compensation.” “Minimum wages and overtime compensation must be paid on a current basis as work is done, such that an employee receives the prescribed compensation without delay. When an employer fails to pay those amounts, the employee suffers losses, which includes the loss of the use of that money during the period of delay,” the court argued in its filing.
He should have a longer sentence than ten years. He'll likely only serve 5 with good behavior That family deserves to rot in bankruptcy
Sick really. He beat and worked some poor intellectually disabled guy that long, 18 hours a day, 6 days a week. That punishment doesn't fit the crime.
