It gives me a connection to young black men. I'm 46 and through industry issues and personal issues I've been forced from corporate America. My situation has put me in a position of working with uneducated inner city young black men.

I try to view my situation as God putting here for a reason. I really want to help these young men learn life lessons they never learned at home. I love hop. A lot of guys my age hate young rappers. Just on a basic level I'm personally like why are you holding on to 30 year old music so my love of new music is just a love of music but it also provides a connection to the youth.

Secondly rappers talk about working. They may talk about crime but they talk about going out and being aggressive and getting money on your own and not complaining or begging

I take the opposite approach and choose not to listen to avoid thinking less of today's youth.

You should just go hoop and meet real people outside of the work setting

Scared of getting sauced on old man?

I bet you shake your head side to side instead of up and down on every song.

Do you like reggae? I am a huge reggae fan. The message is always very positive and uplifting, especially for young black men.

They don't listen to reggae. Not trying to change their preference, just trying to connect.

They also like when I talk hip hop from my youth. I talk about broken homes and lack of male guidance in the inner city. It's a deeper issue than that. Black men are always trying to compete and put each other down

It's a legacy of a survival tactic from slavery. I have very educated friends on FB who.condemn today's hip hop on subject matter as if NWA talked about deep ****

Other than that I genuinely enjoy today's hip hop so it's no big deal but I value the connection it provides me to young black men

I just listen to music for the music. Yeah lyrics can send a message that detracts or engages based on the content, but 99% of music is about harmony, rhythm, and tones that evoke sensory perception. The voice and words are mostly just a tool for harmony, and sound progression.

It's not more complicated than that. The lyrics connecting you to a culture, and state of mind??.... a little... but mostly even hip hop is about the music.
