Computer Question: Why is external computer storage space so much cheaper than internal computer hard drive space?

External Hard drives, or spin drives, are an older technology, which are cheaper but extremely slow. These are useful if you need a place to store lots of data which you don't frequently access, like a back up drive for personal data or a server. The spin drives used to be internal storage and cost roughly the same, but they have been replaced by a newer technology.

New technology, SSD, M.2, MVME interface directly with your motherboard for the blazing fast speeds. We are talking a restart, to back in Windows, ready to go in less than 10 seconds. These are typically smaller in capacity, with an OS installed.

    Why is external storage internal?

What's a good, relatively inexpensive external drive for backup purposes?

There are dozens and it depends on the size / interface you need.

First you need to identify what interface your PC has and pick the fastest available, so the process of backing up is quick:

    Fastest to slowest

    1. Thunderbolt (up to 40 Gbps)
    2. USB 3.1 (10 Gbps), then USB 3.0 (5 Gbps)
    3. eSATA (6 Gbps)
    4. Firewire (6 Gbps)
    5. Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps)
    6. USB 2.0 (480 Mbps)
    7. Ethernet (100 Mbps)

Once you know what interface you have, determine how much space you need.

With that info, just match it with a top brand (Western Digital, Sabrent, Crucial, Samsung, Seagate) and you are good to go.

    For instance,

    USB 3.0
    2 TB
    Western Digital

I was looking at a MacBook pro.
The difference between a 512 gb internal drive and 1tb drive is like 400$

Meanwhile 256 gb thumbdrives are like 25$
So externally...solid state ....can get to 1tb at 100$

While there is a higher cost, Apple forces everyone to pay a premium for their stuff (internal drive, internal memory). They can justify that with "apple" branding.

buy an internal drive then get you an external enclosure, bam.

also It think there is a sand shortage (im serious) so all these computer parts are going up.

the whole Apple ecosytem is villainous genius and capitalism run amok. Apple It gets their fans to buy what ever they release no matter the incremental up grade.

you make it sound like all apple users are mindless idiots who always buy the latest and greatest each year. That's like assuming all luxury car buyers lease cars and only drive new models.

Apple makes a good, easy-to-use product. Do they leverage that? Of course.

I've had two laptops since 2009, a 2009 MBP and a 2017 MBP. totally worth what i paid for them.

People who talk trash about the ‘other side’ generally haven’t tried both.

    Example: America.

Apple fans are easily roped into the Apple ecosystem and Apple leverages their product integration so you stay with them forever

You need to list the OTHER apple products you have, man. lol. You're telling me you dont have an Iphone to go with your MBP?

just because you have old apple products doesn't mean you aren't apart and staunch supporter of the Apple ecosystem.

your analogy about luxury cars is not great since Mercedes (and other luxury car brands) doesn't have the crazy product integration of Apple. There is no specialized gas for Mercedes

Moving the goalposts. Your initial claim was that apple fanboys buy the latest and greatest every year. Not true except in rare cases. Most people recognize there hasn't been more than incremental upgrades on the iPhones for years. I personally went 3GS -> 4S -> 6S+ -> 12.

What is a "staunch supporter of the Apple ecosystem"? Does owning multiple apple products mean I was "easily roped into the Apple ecosystem" or just that i happen to like their products better than the competition? Can I be a moderate Apple fan? Do I HAVE to be an AOC-Apple fan?

If the other side made better **** i'd cross the aisle and use theirs. You want a running list of the non-apple stuff i've used over the years that i didn't like as much as the apple stuff? multiple Palm devices, a Handspring device, a google Nexus tablet, a Samsung laptop, a dell desktop. Hell I use, Windows-based computers at a computer-intensive job 9 hrs a day and still prefer to use my MBP as a my daily driver at home.

....It's also a bit of revisionist history to say that Apple's leveraged ecosystem is the reason why a long-time apple user like myself still uses their products. Maybe they've just made good products for a long time. The more recent horizontal integration is a nice icing on top rather than the cake.

tl:dr, you have an iphone to go with your old MacBookPro confirmed. You probably got Apple TV too. You're in the eco system, Apple got you.

you going so hard just because I said Apple ropes people into buying stuff is the definition of "staunch support".

I'm a mbp lover and even bought a used one with my own money despite using the latest and greatest for work. The i7 chips are expensive, but are reliable workstations if you need processing power. They last beyond 5-7 years if you don't trash it.

Haven't tried out the M1 models and im skeptical about them. A big reason is the pitiful ram they get away with charging customers at a premium. They claim more ram isn't necessary because everything is "beautifully managed" and that "more ram would hog precious battery life". Credit apple for spinning up bullshit and the people who eat it with two hands.

They limit the ram so people are forced to buy newer models every 5 years.

Im also happy with the xr. It was my first apple phone from running Android and doing the whole rooting and hacking scene. Performance is still decent and i could probably sell it for a couole hundred to finance a newer phone. I used to buy pre-owned one yr old Androids but they usually break down after three years despite being top of the line (for that year).

The only thing i mjssy from Android is tethering from rooting and the option if having a nicer screen without paying 60% more for it.

Tl;dr Apple products are more expensive, a bit scammy with addons, but they hold high rrsale value and their models are reliable enough to last 3-5 years.

You get what you pay for. I don't want to go back to Windows laptops. Might if the M1 is still being beta tested live...
