good idea. Let the Trumpsters and the "libertarians" exercise "personal responsibility" "charity for for others" and be "free to choose".

Opposite. If you’re not vaccinated you forfeit any coverage for COVID-19 and its complications by insurance and hospitals can refuse admission.

Is this something you're suggesting or is there an actual proposal in Congress or the Executive branch about this? If this is an actual proposal being considered would be interested in learning more.

The Hippocratic Oath would prevent that. The ACA also still says that insurance providers still have to cover preexisting conditions.

The oath isn't binding but i do believe hospitals legally can't refuse patients in emergencies

A version of this is what I would do, with unfortunate caveats. Once vaccines are available for anyone who wants them (probably 6 weeks from now until anyone interested can have gotten both doses), I would:

    * Re-open everything fully
    * Allow any businesses/organizations to require proof of vaccination if they choose (don't feel safe getting a vaccine, feel free to stay home! Just as people wanted people scared of Covid to do)
    * Government should stop covering Covid-related expenses for anyone not vaccinated (testing, treatment)

At that point, the non-vaccinated people are essentially a risk to themselves only. If they want to get really sick or die, it's their choice as long as everyone else doesn't have to bear the cost. Society can incentivize the vaccine without requiring it by using the same arguments libertarians made over the last year. In the end, a bunch of older Trump voters will end up voluntarily getting themselves killed by 2024.

    The caveats:

    * Kids. This is the biggest issue - kids can't get the vaccine, and even though they don't get nearly as sick, there are ethical issues here with exposing them.
    * Vaccine is like 97% effective but not 100%. So you still have a few breakthrough cases - but if those people are getting flu-ish symptoms but not really at risk of hospitalization/death, then I think you have to move forward.
    * If hospitals get overwhelmed, that's an issue and still affects everyone else. I don't know what the potential caseload is in a society where 60% are vaccinated but the other 40% are roaming free without masks.

Yes the Hippocratic Oath isn’t binding on hospitals but it forms the basis of laws that say that hospitals cannot turn away people in medical emergencies. Usually that’s because of insurance and ability to pay but in this case if someone went to the ER from COVID-19 they would still have to treat.

I could agree with this in principle but with a highly contagious disease that is mutating unvaccinated people are a threat to others even those vaccinated.

I just heard a case in Kentucky of an unvaccinated worker infecting a nursing home. Even though most of the residents were vaccinated three died including one who had been vaccinated. Also having more unvaccinated people gives the virus a chance to linger in reservoirs of the unvaccinated and more chance to mutate.

    Vaccination is a personal choice.
There can be limitations to unvaccinated individuals in public places ,transport or social events where there is a real risk of wide spread but you can't ban them from receiving hospital treatment or testing.

NO covid vaccine trials have included participants that are pregnant , breastfeeding or have underlying conditions like cancer, HIV, autoimmune diseases or others.

My neighbour who has cancer and gets chemiotherapy treatment had to go to a special 4 person doctor comittee in the hospital for the doctors to specifically decide if he should receive or not. Many gynaecologists advise pregnant women to wait until after birth to get vaccinated.

For many conditions it is so not easy as to say "get vaccinated or get punished" when there is zero published safety data.

    Plus the safety data changes.
Just recently the EU CDC posted new data that shows that young people in low infection areas have similar risk from getting in the ICU or die from the actual disease as blood clotting from the Astrazeneca vaccine.

Yeah - that's where those caveats come in. My solution works in a theoretical world where the vaccine is 100% effective. I don't know realistically the solution to dealing with a bunch of crazy anti-vaxxers and how much we screw with life for everyone else.

I do think this is a strong argument for vaccine passports. If nursing homes could say you can't work here or visit unless you're vaccinated, it would protect the residents and (marginally) encourage more people to get the vaccine.

I wonder what the actual numbers are on that - what the percentage breakdown is. The ACOG and my wife's OBGYN advised to get the vaccine.

There are certain people with some allergies that prevent them from getting the vaccine.
